No no no no no no. You are NOT allowed to introduce any logical thoughts here! |
WTF? Are you high right now? Allergies are not a mental illness. |
Hypochondria is a mental illness. |
PP, and I was not suggesting that it is a mental illness. However, our experience of any physical reaction has a mental component. Anxiety and panic can cause similar reactions as fragrance and chemical sensitivities, which is why it is worth exploring whether shifting thoughts can improve physical symptoms. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6457695/#:~:text=Cognitive%20behavioural%20therapy%20(CBT)%20may,exacerbations%20and%20better%20asthma%20control. |
God you people are so insulting. I’ve had asthma and allergies my whole life, diagnosed through allergy testing. I wish I could just “think” them away! |
You can't think them away. No one is saying that. CBT is not a cure, but a complementary treatment to help you manage the way you experience very real health conditions. It's not in your head, but anger, fear, and anxiety all make real physical conditions feel worse. PS, I also have allergies and chronic pain from endometriosis. CBT is not a cure, but healthier thoughts improves my experience of these conditions. |
Thank you for sharing and sorry to hear that. Endometriosis is another thing that tends to get dismissed. Can you share what you’ve done that has helped? Worked with a therapist? A book? |
Expanding the subject, not changing. Personal fragrance is in this mix. |
Then start a separate thread. The subject of this thread is perfume. Don’t hijack it. |
And of course avoiding the trigger is the best way. All this dousing in personal fragrances and laundry fragrances etc isn’t good for anyone. This is a holdover from when people did not bathe daily/frequently as we do now. Time to cut way back on these things for everyone’s sake. |
Pp is not an example of logical. *All*these perfume wearers say all they do is hit the pulse points. They still stink. They can’t tell because the olfactory system adapts. |
I agree! Maybe nut allergies are just anxiety. How does that sound? To the pp who asked if I just don't go outside: I'm not allergic to every scent out there. I avoid detergent and cleaning aisles. I will turn around and go the opposite direction of some dimwit who had to share their favorite scent. Or smells of cigarette smoke. Inhalers and allergy meds are part of daily life. I lose my voice at least once/year. Sleep sitting up some nights so I can breathe. When ds was little his asthma was so bad that I couldn't work. All it took for a trip to the ER was a windy day in the spring or fall. I kept him inside a lot. Many daycares would not even consider enrolling him. If we went anywhere different I had to know where the hospital was. He had 2 attacks that could have been fatal if the hospital had been very far away. People still continue to poo-poo the problem though. |

People still continue to poo-poo the problem though. That's not about perfume. BTW, loads of businesses have had lobby scenting for over a decade now. If you shop, work, or go on vacation, you have been exposed. If there hasn't been an attack, perhaps there's something going on here. |
I totally agree. I'm also careful not to wear my Jo Malone on an airplane, at the workplace, in any healthcare setting. Time and place. |
So odd! You couldn't prove otherwise. You couldn't prove that she is wrong because the whole point is you WOULD NEVER KNOW. You just assume you know and can't possibly be wrong. Are you like that with everything or just this? |
