Teen death at Whitman?

Also, I wonder why the cops didn't help his father look when he went to the station at 3:30 am.

Cops aren't babysitters. They aren't going to make sure every drunk gets home safe. If they found a drunk alone, maybe the would have hauled him in. But I also have to wonder about why nothing was done at 3:30 am.

The cops didn't do anything because 999 out of 1000 times a teen misses curfew, he is asleep at a friend's house and forgot to text/call them with that news. They knew he wasn't driving because he left his car at home. Teens "go missing" for hours at a time ALL THE TIME EVERY DAY. Cops do not go looking for them without good reason.

This is a horrific story. An absolutely devastating loss. A tragic accident. A teen made a few bad choices in an evening and it cost him his life. Finger pointing will not make that awful fact any less true. Every teen that has ever lived has made a bad choice here or there. The vast majority are lucky enough to get through high school and college with some crazy stories. I am gutted for this family, but I don't think this was anything but an accident.

Unfortunately in today's environment someone has to be responsible. Sadly, I'm sure there will be lawsuits.

That's the end of the conversation in my house. High school kids don't have sleepovers.

The first thing the principal at Whitman tells incoming freshman parents is "no more sleepovers".

I don't want to derail the thread, but this can't really be true, can it? High school sleepovers are the best! Not tons of people, but with a best friend or two.

I don't think sleepovers are the issue here.

Reading the WaPo article about this, I'm reminded of how irresponsible it is to criticize or speculate based on rumors.

On this thread, or maybe the one in MD Schools, there were folks saying the boy's dad didn't call the police until the next day, or never called the police.

It turns out the dad had been looking since 3:30am, and had CALLED the police and directed them to the last location that the "Find My Friends" phone had pinged before the phone died.

He did everything that any of us would have done. To go through that, to have called the police, to have directed them to the general correct area, and STILL have to find his body yourself?

What a nightmare.

I was a good kid-- got good grades, had a job, etc. My parents didn't know I was partying-- they were great parents but were not on top of me every second (and I don't believe any of you who say you know where your kid is all times in HS). This could have happened to me or any of my friends. Right now, this could happen to your kids or any of their friends. If you think 'never my kid' or 'I would kill my kid for that' then you are the type of parents whose kids wont tell them when they need a ride home from such party, etc...be smart people-- maybe not all HS kids drink, but don't kid yourself that your child is somehow safe from all of this because you are such a great parent.

I agree with you 100%
- a good kid in HS, who's raising what I hope are good kids, who knows this could have been pretty much anyone

The place where his body was found is not on the way to his house from the 7-11, where he was seen around 11:00, or the party, which broke up around 10:40. I think maybe a group of them went to hang out at the swim club or the woods near the swim club after stopping at the 7-11.

I thought an earlier report said that the kids had been in the woods and lost track of him. Does anyone else remember reading (or seeing) that?

Those of you blaming the parents whose house the party was at - have you read ANY of the coverage? As soon as they found out older kids were there (including Navid) and had brought alcohol, they called the police to the house and immediately instructed everyone to call their parents for rides.

What on earth could they have done other that that? They were home and their kid had a few friends over (no alcohol present and when they found out some was brought, they immediately broke it up).

Yes, I did see this before...I'm wondering the same.

I think those posts were speculation from before the coverage you refer to was released. I'm not excusing the speculation, just providing context.

Earlier news reports said that an anonymous caller had called police to complain about a large, loud, underage drinking party with bonfire and partyers in the back and front yards. That's probably why people assumed that the parents, if they were home, knew that this party was happening and were o.k. with it.

Now we're hearing that it was intended to be a non drinking party, some older teenagers showed up with alcohol and when the parents realized that kids were drinking, the party was broken up.

The devil is in the details here.

I thought a neighbor (anonymously) called the police. Not the parents home where house the party was happening.

I think it's possible that the kids could have walked to the 7-11 and then on to the swim club to hang out in the woods and goof around, maybe drink a little more.

But, obviously, the boy did not get his bottle of vodka from 7-11. They may have gone to 7-11 to get snacks, if so there should be surveillance video of them in the store.
