S/O people who think tattoos are trashy (or not)

I have a full back piece. I think tattoos on most others are trashy but I waited until I was 40 to get mine. You can’t see my tattoo unless I am naked or in a bikini. Not sure I care what others think - I am about as non-trashy as they come and you would never suspect I had a back full of ink if you met me.

Totally awesome.

Love this!!

Sorry if this comes off as sexist, but I think tattoos can look really cool on certain types of men (edgy/artsy types), but on women, I think it's generally a trashy look. I'd say the same in reverse about earrings: looks great on women and trashy on men.

I think a small tattoo or two in a discrete place is nbd. Tramp stamps have negative connotations, but if I looked past that, I think a small tasteful one there would be sexy.

That said, many people take this entirely too far and all the visible tattoos on the backs of women’s necks or wrists look trashy. Sleeves, especially when it’s asymmetrical, look awful. Instantly ruins a beautiful woman.

The same goes for too many tattoos. Less is more.

Because the important thing about tattoos is their effect on your opinion of a woman's physical attractiveness?

This thread asks for opinions about tattoos. He gave his opinion about tattoos.

Signed, I’m as feminist as they come.

Grew up in rural, blue collar community. Dad was Air Force, Mom was SAHM. Master's degree. HH income $300+, Catholic, Mexican heritage, 6th generation American.

I think tattoos are trashy/ugly. I don't feel strongly about them on anyone else, but not for me and glad DH doesn't have any and hope my children never get any.

UMC here, trashy is not the word. Short sighted, poor judgment comes to mind tho.

I don't have one. Always fantasized about it. Don't have the guts? Not quite sure why though. I feel like I'd be "trying to say something" but the message would get lost in judgments. I feel like it's too late now and would be quite meta.

My dad had one (military). I think at that time it was acceptable for all of his group of military guys to get one.

My DH has one and got it on a whim in college - it's ugly, bizarre, handmade like he was in prison and we laugh about it a lot. Luckily on his back so no one sees it. I don't think it speaks to anything regarding his personality, state of mind, ability to human or lifestyle. It's a story.

I turned 50 and decided to get a tramp stamp that looks like a line of vines and flowers. It says "bad decision" in swirly writing but it takes you a second to realize it actually says something. I've walked a sensible straight line in life and needed to do something stupid because at this stage of my life, who cares?

Yes impulsive and short sighted is more my thought on tattoos.

Ha ha ha!! I love this.

Master's degree, professional, HHI $300k

I like tattoos when they are clearly planned out-- like when someone has a well-done sleeve, or a thoughtful tattoo of something meaningful to them on their ankle. What looks trashy to me is when people use their body as basically a canvas for random tattoos-- placement isn't coordinated, tattoos appear randomly everywhere, some colored, some not.

Growing up, it seemed only bikers or prisoners had tattoos, thus the association was that only "rough" types had them. No professional person would be caught dead with one. Then when I was a young adult, they became trendy. I think they're ugly as shit, I think following trends is stupid, and can't quite put aside the negative association from when I was growing up, so I would never get one. Naturally, since it was trendy, I know lots of different types of people who do have them. I internally wrinkle my nose when I see them, but how I perceive a person is not dependent on whether or not they have a tattoo.

Tattoos have gone through their trendy phase and come out the other side as just something some people choose to do. That certain people can't get past the idea that tattoos are no longer a particularly remarkable decision says a lot more about them than the character of people who choose to get a tattoo.

I’d say it goes in the other direction judging by this thread? The people with ink are claiming it buys street cred, is a subtle form of rebellion, and so on. While the people saying negative things are shrugging at the supposed edginess and instead pointing to a lack of judgement and long-term planning (which exist whatever your motive).

The people with ink have given numerous reasons, just like the people who don't like ink. You've also heard people with tattoos talk about planning their tattoos, waiting until they're older, placing them in locations that don't interfere with jobs, etc., which clearly cuts against the claims that all tattoos are a result of a lack of judgment or poor planning. Really, the biggest difference is that only one side calling the other stupid trash, which does say something about their character. Although the title of the thread has set up that language.

Trashy and conformist. And no, I've never seen one I considered "art."

Pretty much all styles are conformist. Goth is conformist. Tattoos are no exception.
