Racial issues in DCPS for mixed race kids

This doesn't seem diverse to me. Also, only 32% of the students live in bounds. So, it makes me wonder why the majority of the residents who live in the Shepherd Park area don't send their children to Shepherd. Where do the other residents in that area send their children?

Oyster is truly a diverse school. I just checked out their profile and their school's page as well. I love the diversity that is represented there. Are there any other elementary schools in DCPS that have an international environment like Oyster?

The official Shepherd demographics don't reflect trends in the lower grades. My kid's class is roughly 20% white, 12% biracial, and the remainder black/African American, and all families are in-boundary. If this trend continues, it'll be increasingly difficult to get in OOB at the PK level.

Shepherd Park is a predominantly black middle/upper-middle class neighborhood, although there is a sizable observant Jewish population as well. Most families have sent their kids to religious schools, charters, or secular privates in past years, although many new families moving in are choosing Shepherd Elementary.

As for an international presence, Shepherd had their annual International Festival a few weeks ago. There were presentations from Russia, Germany, Panama, West African countries, West Indian countries, Puerto Rico, Tanzania, Japan, Ethiopia--and that's just from what I recall. My kid's class has students who speak several different languages at home. So there is definitely an international presence there.

Finally, in case it matters, one of us is biracial and the other is black but not African American (raised in Europe)--our experience thus far is that Shepherd's a warm, wonderful and welcoming little school to families of all backgrounds.

Thank you for this information about Shepherd. I truly appreciate it.

I'd recommend looking into Eaton. It has a lot of diversity, both racially & socio-economically, & very strong academics. We are a biracial family & have found it to be a warm, welcoming & inclusive environment.

I agree with this. As a mixed race family, the first thing I would look at, considering any school, is the demographic profile. No way I would send my kids to predominantly black school. Eaton's demographics mirror as closely as we would like to find for our family. If you look at DCPS you can compare school profile pages easily. If you do want a demographic profile that is not 80%+ white don't even bother looking at Janney, Key, Lafayette, Murch, or Mann.

Sorry, my numbers are a bit inflated. Should have looked at the profiles pages in more details before I posted. My point was trying to demonstrate that most of the upper NW schools are predominantly white, if you chose that for your child. As you head south, but stay in upper NW you will find schools that are not as high % white. Key and Mann are better than I expected, refreshingly so. It's no wonder there isn't much chatter and mudslinging on this site about those schools, there are probably great places to send kids to school. Or maybe they hide their baggage well.

Are you mixed raced? So whats the difference between a majority black school and a majority white one? Are black people an evil group of people or something? My goodness the racism and ignorance directed toward blacks in this thread is an eye opener. I'm not mad though I like hearing what "others" really think about my race no matter how ignorant. It lets me and my family know what the read deal is

+1000 This thread is so racist it's shocked.

I'm biracial, before you all start posting that I don't understand, and I'm appalled by the blanket statements by mother's of biracial children in this thread. I'm hoping and praying that the children are less prejudiced than their parents.

To be fair that poster took an underhanded jab at my child's school (which is majority white) in a later post. Way to offend everyone!

Not the OP you responded to but I don't want my biracial child at a majority black or white school.

Could you explain what's so racist? I think people are getting upset that AAs are being criticized. That's not racist. The comments are directed at AAs who take it upon themselves to force racial identity on children. Certainly, white people have been guilty of this. AAs are too and deserve being called out. Perhaps the behavior will change, perhaps it won't. Until then biracial children are better off in diverse areas where they self-identification may be respected. In all black enclaves it's typical that the "one drop" rule will be acknowledged as valid. This disgusting racist viewpoint has no place in our society. And biracial kids don't deserve to be subjected to it.

So it's not ok for AAs to generalize all biracial children, but it's ok for you to generalize all AAs - particuarly all black "enclaves". And if you don't think that's been the tone of this thread, I challenge you to re-read it in its entirety.

Plenty of ppl said it wasn't "all" black people. Stop freaking out. Certainly everyone would benefit from checking their language re "never" "always" "typical" etc. But by and large ppl are just talking about the crap that happened to them personally so just take it with the requisite grain of salt. And be kind yourself.

And who CREATED that view point? Def not African Americans...blacks accepted "mixed" people into their community because they faced the same hardships and discrimination as fully black people. Had blacks turned their backs on mixed raced people you all would be whining about that. Blacks accepting bi racial people has nothing to do with some silly stupid notion of "keeping our numbers up"...thats something white racist worry about, that has never been an issue or discussion in the black community. Its almost laughable that Bi racial people actual think that. I know plenty of Bi racial kids who grew up in black enclaves and none has the mental issues or anger towards AA like the bi racial people posting in this thread. Its clear you dont like AA period, it has nothing to do with some one drop rule or your experience with AA...because I seriously doubt you have EVER lived around AA...I'm 100 percent positive you grew up mostly around whites which is where your anger, hatred, and rage towards AA comes from

Oh super -- now you're generalizing! Every biracial person you know had a super positive experience therefore everyone else is delusional! And everyone nows the one-drop rule is the creation of white supremacists but that doesn't mean that SOME black people haven't internalized it and perpetuated it in their treatment of biracial people.
