Child killed by Neighborhood Watch captain while walking home

The girfriend's account is very disturbing. The only thing that gives me pause is this:

"We're going to turn this over to the Justice Department because the family does not trust the Sanford Police Department to have anything to do with the investigation," said Crump.

While I completely understand, and agreed with, their sentiment, it's been almost 4 weeks since the death. There was never a report made of this conversation to the police at the time of the shooting? Why is it just coming out now? There may be a good explanation, but it is a little odd.

Many of the witnesses have said that the police were not interested in hearing their statements. No one came to interview them or ask what they saw/heard. Maybe there was attempt sot make a report or even a report made but it wasn't given any attention. The girlfriend was hospitalized due to the trauma so it may not have been something the family wanted a lot of attention about.

So far, we know this....

So far, all we know is what the media has selectively broadcast to create a sensation. My "storytelling" is no different than the half-baked fiction we see in the news. Tawana Brawley comes to mind here, so does the Duke Lacrosse Team issue some years back.

The 17-year old Trayvon had some candy and a bottle of tea on him. Did they check inside the tea bottle to see if it was indeed tea and not alcohol, or drugs? Was it candy or crystal meth? Was there a coroner's report for artifacts on the corpse?

Even if Trayvon had just a ball of string and some pocket lint it does not mean he wasn't carrying a gun previously, or cocaine for that matter. Trayvon could have seen the Watch Captain and ran, thinking he was a policeman, ditching his gun and drugs which would explain why Zimmerman chose to pursue. Trayvon could have been trying to break into a house, or jacking a car.

All we have is selective, unverified "witnesses" blabbing this and that to build a sensational story. All that you have read is unverified hearsay which is inadmissible in a court of law.

For the moment, I am siding with the police who were there and who used their judgement concerning the situation.

I refuse to get worked up over something when all the facts are not present.

Yeah, why bother when you can just make up your own facts.

Maybe aliens took Trayvon's gun (an Uzi, naturally), too! When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.

Yes, all those are possible explanations. But it does complicate things.

We have Zimmerman's own words on tape. And the witnesses in the neighborhood aren't hearsay. You need to look the meaning of that word up.

Obviously he was questioned by police because he issued a statement that he fired in self defense.

And, I will go out on a limb here, and predict a court, or inquiry, will come to the same conclusion as the police who questioned Zimmerman: Trayvon acted in a manner which caused Zimmerman to fear for his life so he fired.

In the end, the ignorant rapper, the political hay makers, will have turned a non-event, that is, the gunning down of a piece of human excrement, into an expensive circus trial.

Disgusting. Posted from the Department of Homeland Security. Probably the biggest collection of defective human beings ever collected in one place. Apologies to the non-defective DHS personnel, but you probably suffer from it more than most of us.

Wow. So abominable that a person with that kind of mentality work for DHS and may have some power over other people. Further erodes my faith in that department, but it wasn't high to begin with.

Seriously? A DHS employee comments on a law enforcement case using government computers? Can't they fire you for something like that?

There was a trial recently in Tampa where the killer raised this stand your ground defense. The killer was a tow truck driver who illegally and improperly towed individuals' cars. When people went to retrieve their cars, the driver would not release them. A man got in his car and began to drive off the lot. The tow driver stood in front of the moving car. When the driver would not stop, the tow driver shot the man dead. He then said he was in fear of his life. The jury found him guilty of second degree murder.

A judge is now considering the issue in a different case involving two grown men fighting on a play ground. A gun appeared in the middle of the melee and one man is dead. Killed in front of his ten year old. The killer's defense is the Florida stand your ground statute. The judge must decide whether their is enough evidence to dismiss the charges based on the statute. If she dismisses the charge, the state can appeal. If she does not dismiss based on the statute of stand your ground, the defendant can still raise a self defense defense at trial.
