Yeah it’s kinda ridiculous that Rio people are fighting against whole Wootton to move to crown. |
DP. Great. Now apply that same principle to each MCPS-served community. And make sure it covers academic opportunity and all the rest for any individual student, as well. Solve for y. It's not that moving Wootton to a new facility and incorporating the nearby communities should be the only option. That option should be explored, adjusted and evaluated with the entirety of the system in mind, though, even as MCPS should be considering ways to ensure the overall plan for the more impacted individual neighborhoods/families result in broadly equitable provision of educational services. |
If it were to be fixed at best it would be 10-15 years and many schools are in worse condition. You are getting a new school. Take it and stop complainings. |
Many of our schools haven't had any remodeling and are in worse shape. PLUS, they lack the academic offerings so our kids have to go to MC, which is a huge burden on parents was there isn't transportation, or go without. |
They put out option H and Wootton communities have clearly rejected the option. So that’s it for exploration as it makes no sense to go against the whole community. Don’t threaten Wootton families that they’ll stuck old moldy building without renovation forever because they didn’t accept option H. This kind of bullying needs to stop. |
I stated I was Asian because dcum likes to dump on Asians, and not all Asians are created equal. Yes, it's easier to accept when you're not "harmed" by it, and it's harder to accept when you are emotional about it. Logically, Wootton at Crown makes the most sense. |
Have the Wootton faculty and staff clearly rejected the option? I doubt it. |
What a bunch of crock. Tell that to someone who doesn't live in 20878. I live in this area and Dufief and Travilah kids are already bussed to Wootton. No big difference if we are bussed to Crown. It's one small subset that is making this huge noise. The main dynamic here you talk about is definitely not walkability for majority of Wootton feeders. |
If you don’t live in Wootton district and don’t understand how Wootton community feels, then it doesn’t matter what makes sense to you. |
I don't need to live in the Wootton cluster to know what makes logical sense. Declining enrollment, huge budget shortfall, brand new HS, and you think it makes logical financial sense to fix up Wootton? That's an emotional decision, not a logical one. |
We are not. It's only a small subset that are talking about walkability. The main thing is not walkability. It's just an excuse because you don't want to say we don't want the low SES kids mingling with ours |

There's large-scale renovation, which costs hundreds of millions of dollars, and will not happen if Option H is rejected.
But is there lesser-scale maintenance, mold mitigation, etc. that is feasible logistically and financially if H is rejected? |
That’s because you’re viewing this through a narrow lens, missing the real challenges of losing a community center to the local residents. It’s not just about MCPS as relocating or closing Wootton would cause major economic disruption for Rockville city too. It’s not that simple. |

Blake, currently overcrowded, is the only school projected to be overcrowded by any significant amount (Rockville is the other, but much less so), not being addressed via either boundary study, and there are planners who expect it to get worse. Whitman being a 5 minute farther drive from one of the new/expanded facilities than another school is a relatively minor consideration when considered in light of the overall need for the system to provide equitable service, including adequate facilities. If, by changing its service area (say, a couple of neighborhoods currently served by adjacent high schools), MCPS opens up better options for those schools and the ones beyond, such changes should be in the mix of those considered. By limiting the study areas, not only is Blake (and Rockville) overcrowding left to remain despite the projected adequate capacity of the overall system, but more holistic options, like moving a bit of Churchill to Whitman (or even the other way, though more disruptive) with cascading effect to relieve other schools has been left off of the table. |
