Because it’s true. These schools are much better known than Vandy for Engineering and CS. And obviously Carnegie Mellon and Cornell. But Vandy is a solid choice if you don’t get into any of these. |
Actually, most kids I know who apply to a top 20 private and Ga Tech and are accepted to both, pick the top 20 private even though they are ranked lower in STEM. However, these kids also aren’t bent on just working in tech, but may want to work in finance or other areas yet don’t feel like Tech does much for them in those areas nor do they think it will be a problem working at FAANG either. |
Vandy also gives great financial aid, so for some people, Vandy is less expensive than out-of-state Georgia Tech or UTAustin. Vandy is no loan tuition-free for families with incomes under $150,000. |
I have no dog in this race but you are so dumb. Vanderbilt can't touch those two schools in the field of engineering. I mean you would have to be stupid to pick Vanderbilt for engineering over those schools if you were actually admitted to those schools which is probably unlikely OOS for both |
Really? Will let me introduce you to my kid. Accepted to Northwestern and Notre Dame and picked GT for Engineering. Loved all three schools. Vanderbilt not even on his radar. |
This is a valid in the decision process, if it applies. |
Yep and both UT and GT are also test required and don't do ED. |
Good for you? You missed the part about kids not being 100% working directly in tech even as STEM majors. I will admit the kids I know picked Penn, Cornell and U Chicago and yes a girl picked Vandy but I think the male/female skew was a major contributor to that. Of the four, ironically only the girl is working directly in tech. |
But almost no merit aid whatsoever. Like most privates in this tier. DS (who had the resume for most Ivies ) was offered merit - including one full ride offer - from multiple ~T35-45s. Not a dollar from Vandy. But, he likes it there. He’s one of the really smart, social, fun (white, unhooked) types that you’re all analyzing. And for males, at least, you all have the Vandy “Greek culture” thing completely wrong. It’s obvious to me that those pontificators are on the far outside looking in and getting their info from other outsiders on Reddit and CC. Frat like at Vandy is super low key and not exclusive. Anyone in DS’s fraternity who needs a scholarship to participate in Greek like gets one, no questions asked. They also get additional money for frat events if they ask (for travel, event tickets). It’s incredibly egalitarian. |
Vandy is better for engineering if you are interested in studying engineering but don’t necessarily actually want to be an engineer. The curriculum also allows for more non-engineering classes, and, particularly compared to GA Tech, you aren’t surrounded by engineers.
There are also reasons why a kid might want a smaller private school. |
Someone should give them better info https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/business-quantitative-analysis?_sort=rank&_sortDirection=asc https://quantnet.com/mfe-programs-rankings/ |
So…you listed quant rankings…and what’s interesting is both Penn and Chicago were actually ranked higher…yet Penn and Chicago have way more graduates working in quant but also way more working in portfolio management at hedge funds which actually employs more people than the pure quant funds. Not to mention STEM kids at say Penn or Chicago can choose to work for MBB or banking or PE or VC. Finally, FAANG recruits tons of kids from those schools as well…so if you want to work at FAANG, then lots of options too. Ga Tech is great, but there are many kids opting for other top privates over Ga Tech. |
*And very low assets. |
My point was GT is not just engineering classes which I thought was the point you were making. They also have a Top 20 Undergraduate Business School in Scheller. A lot of options for the Engineering nerds ![]() |
Fabulous news and the beginning of a trend back to sanity. |
