A huge number of the freshmen are premed or engineering and are taking Gen Chem.
Imagine Vanderbilt being the choice to study engineering.
Vandy is a draw for engineering kids who didn’t get into Georgia Tech, Rice or UT Austin
Gatech?UT Austin??? Why are some of you so desperate to elevate marginal publics?
Because it’s true. These schools are much better known than Vandy for Engineering and CS. And obviously Carnegie Mellon and Cornell. But Vandy is a solid choice if you don’t get into any of these.
Actually, most kids I know who apply to a top 20 private and Ga Tech and are accepted to both, pick the top 20 private even though they are ranked lower in STEM. However, these kids also aren’t bent on just working in tech, but may want to work in finance or other areas yet don’t feel like Tech does much for them in those areas nor do they think it will be a problem working at FAANG either.
Really? Will let me introduce you to my kid. Accepted to Northwestern and Notre Dame and picked GT for Engineering. Loved all three schools. Vanderbilt not even on his radar.
Good for you? You missed the part about kids not being 100% working directly in tech even as STEM majors. I will admit the kids I know picked Penn, Cornell and U Chicago and yes a girl picked Vandy but I think the male/female skew was a major contributor to that. Of the four, ironically only the girl is working directly in tech.
