Here is the answer recently posted on a different thread: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/15/1278528.page#30612756

"U14 is very competitive in all clubs. Moco has a lot of returners who want to make it back to their teams or climb one level within the club. If your daughter is comparable to a returner in all aspects, the returner will likely get the spot. Some teams lose a few players to better clubs, so that's a chance for players from other clubs to make a team. But these outsiders will compete with club players who want to trickle up from the bottom teams. If players trickle up, a few spots become available in the bottom teams. Those few spots will likely be taken by players from weaker clubs who want an upgrade. It is very unlikely to make a Moco team with no club experience, especially at the U14 level. To increase your chances to make a Moco team, go to their fall tryouts - that's where you will see some (but not all) of your competition."

Are Moco Tryouts Usually competitive?

It depends a lot whether it is a beginner clinic or a more advanced clinic. If your daughter only played rec, she is a beginner (do not assume her to be intermediate). If she is not out of breath after the first 10-15 minutes, she is doing good. The rest of the clinic is probably drills and games. It is hard to keep up with intermediate / advanced Metro clinics as a beginner. Most likely she will end up on the lower court with some opportunities to develop basic skills. But you likely paid too much to develop those skills at a Metro clinic. Tell her to enjoy the experience no matter what and observe the action on the top court if she has the chance.

It depends on the age group, with higher age groups more competitive than the early age groups. It is quite rare to make a higher age MOCO team with no club experience. The top players who cannot make MVSA will likely pick MOCO instead. MOCO also develops players through their teams (and some may be as good as the MVSA players). The more context you provide, the easier and more targeted the answer can be. It is hard to provide answer to very generic questions that capture the full picture.

Some of our lessons learned. My daughter, with years of experience, isn’t going to Paramount or Metro. There are too many there and tryouts are too hectic. She thought about it but prioritized other long shots last year and this hurt her. She then, also prioritized back up clubs she didn’t really want to play for because she thought they would be easy offers. She hadn’t gone to clinics. They weren’t.

This year she is only looking at a small handful of mid range clubs and going to the pre season clinics. We will see how that goes.

This is in line with the advice I keep offering on this forum: have a backup club and not more than one dream club. Focus heavily on the club(s) in your DD's range of ability and skills. I agree that this is hard to know / evaluate for a beginner parent.

That was so eye opening. As good as you think your DD is, she will get a pretty good picture of how much better everyone is, how competitive the tryout process can be, and it will reset your DD’s expectations. It’s a reality check but also a really good workout.

I suggest trying a Metro positional clinic only after one year of club volleyball. A beginner would be overwhelmed by such clinic and the benefit is minimal. You need a better understanding of the game before you benefit from a Metro positional clinic.

I would call that a safe club for the bottom (purple and white) teams. 13s and 14s top (black) teams were above the average in the region. A beginner will likely make the bottom teams, but they had beginners on their top teams as well. Like in any other clubs, coaching is better for the black teams compared to the bottom teams.

There was a discussion on a different thread comparing different teams in the region at U14 level: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1279029.page
To summarize, the comparison (which now includes Metro Central and Academy) led to the following order: PVC1 > MOCO2 > Metro Central > MEVC1 > MOCO3 > MEVC2 > DMV > PVC2 > Academy > PVC3.
This is for the 14 age group (the players who will be playing 15 this incoming season). The order is different for other age groups.

Thank you for bumping - there is a lot of good information here for beginner families. You can feel the happiness, hope, disappointment during the tryouts with really good advice on what you can do to land on your feet. If you are new to volleyball and want to get into club, read from the beginning for a preview of what you will be going through in a couple of months.

He said it went ok, but no yes or no was given and I personally left confused. Did he miss the decision? Should I take this as a “Thanks for coming to try out, the answer is no, bye now?” Should I follow up with the coach? What is the usual process?

Here is a thread dedicated to tryouts - read at will. The short answer is that you will learn once decisions are made. Depending how the tryouts are organized, you may get an answer the same day or after a few days. Getting an offer the same day shows that the club really wants you. Getting a negative answer the same day is bad news: they have much better players. Not getting an answer typically means that you still have a chance of getting a spot on the team, but they keep you waiting until they are sure they want to send an offer.

New parent: How many clubs is the number to tryout for? We currently are signed up for two. I don't want to overwork my DD but I always want to be in the best position possible to make a team.
