In the 60s it was standard to wash hair once a week to hold a "set." Sometime in the late 60s a shampoo ad came out (might have been Prell) saying it was so gentle you could wash your hair every day. Hairstyles became looser and more casual.
I remember this from reading teen novels and advice stuff in the 1960s (graduated h.s. in 1972 by which time of course it was all long straight parted in the middle hair). If you ask google you will find many sites where the once a week shampoo was standard at the time.
I don't shampoo daily because I wash it in the shower and I shower every other day because of extremely dry skin (all my life) which is prone to eczema and itching (dr. said no daily showers). Aging has made my hair drier as well, although I can feel slight oiliness by the end of the second day.
You can also let your hair get wet without sudsing it up.
