What's with the trend of not washing hair everyday?

Because you stink.

If someone stinks you're smelling BO. Not their hair. Hope this helps.

PP walks around thinking everyone stinks. I think she’s probably smelling her own BO all day…

People in this thread are the weirdos who insist if you're not scrubbing your anus raw with steel wool you smell like poop. When in reality just being hit with some soap or body wash and warm water is more than enough for the average person.

They likely still wash their chicken before cooking it, too.

Oh gross. Stop with your nasty poor hygiene. Use at least a washcloth everywhere.

Actually physical exfoliation can damage the skin and create microtears.

In the 60s it was standard to wash hair once a week to hold a "set." Sometime in the late 60s a shampoo ad came out (might have been Prell) saying it was so gentle you could wash your hair every day. Hairstyles became looser and more casual.

I remember this from reading teen novels and advice stuff in the 1960s (graduated h.s. in 1972 by which time of course it was all long straight parted in the middle hair). If you ask google you will find many sites where the once a week shampoo was standard at the time.

I don't shampoo daily because I wash it in the shower and I shower every other day because of extremely dry skin (all my life) which is prone to eczema and itching (dr. said no daily showers). Aging has made my hair drier as well, although I can feel slight oiliness by the end of the second day.

You can also let your hair get wet without sudsing it up.

Your doctor is giving you out dated information on daily bathing: https://nationaleczema.org/treatments/bathing/

It's not outdated!

Showering every other day is fine, particularly for people with dry skin.

You’re posting articles from 2021 and 2024. The National Eczema org’s article was medically reviewed/posted in 2025.

Again, you have outdated information.

NP, but kindly STFU and stay in your line.

No. False information needs to be corrected.

My dermatologist says I can shower every other day. I shower every other day. My skin looks and feels great. It's not "false information."

It is. It’s ok to admit you have outdated information. But insisting it’s still correct for those with eczema is the definition of false information.

“Outdated information” like you’re posting a JAMA article lmfao. Gtfo.

I’m 47 and the hairdresser I went to as a kid said it was better not to wash everyday. It’s not new.

The string you’re responding to specifically mentioned eczema prone skin, not just dry skin. This is why the updated information on eczema was posted because doctors have changed their recommendations.

Anonymous wrote:Sorry, but I’m never doing every other day. It’s never the same. I grew up in a culture where cleanliness and freshness is a priority. I know a woman that insists she only needs to wash her hair every three or four days, because her hair doesn’t need it. Trust me, it does. She always looks…not so fresh. And then can’t understand why other women look so put together and she doesn’t.

What culture is clean and fresh? Are they “invitation only” or can I join!? Do they all smell good?

Ok, but what about the smell? People around you can smell the grossness.

Don’t know what to tell you, but my head doesn’t smell bad. I guess my scalp doesn’t overproduce oils. Tbf if I didn’t wash my face every day it wouldn’t develop a smell either. So it’s a weird question.

+1 My hair texture never gets greasy and it doesn't smell unpleasant-- unless you don't like the smell of my shampoo, etc. which I can still smell when I do wash it. Personally, my hair looks the worst on the day I wash it. It takes a day to "calm down" and look normal. But I never had pimples either and my face doesn't get greasy, so my scalp is probably the same, Every body is different. Do what works for you.

When I was younger I had to wash my hair every day or it would get greasy and stringy. Now in my 40s I can wash it every other day.

When my hair is long, I wash every other day. When it is short, everyday. Scalp smells rancid.

I need to condition my hair more often than wash my hair.i tend to go three days between washing my fine blond hair.

I'm 36 and I've literally never washed my hair every day. It's never been something I've done.

Currently I wash 2-3x a week.
