What's with the trend of not washing hair everyday?

I remember being a teen with greasy hair and not washing it, and I feel gross just remembering it. I know some of my coworkers do not wash their hair as much, and honestly, if you are close, their hair stinks. Where is this new "hair mantra" coming from?
I am talking about a white woman's hair here. I know that different types of hair need different care, but I know that white women in the U.S., in my circles, used to wash hair every day in the 90s and 2000s.

What's with the trend of caring what other people do?

This.

I can't from far away, but I can from a few feet away. Maybe some people have more sensitive noses than others. I can also smell the outside on people -- geosmin -- but no one else in my family can.

I can't line dry any clothes outside. It smells afterwards. It's this area. Never had a problem out west.

I can also smell “the outside” on people, and on myself! It’s so gross. But my spouse thinks I am crazy when I say that. I feel so validated reading your post

Everyone can’t smell this? That outside smell. Ahh I didn’t know that. I have a nose like a truffle pig and it does gross me out a lot. I can smell when someone is on their period and wearing a pad.

That being said, most people do not smell if they wash their hair every other or every 3rd day.

Yes me too. I can absolutely smell when people have their period. Are there people who cannot smell this. They are lucky. For the record, I can also smell outside and smelly hair.

No you cannot.

Uhh, some people (including myself) absolutely can smell it when someone is wearing a maxi pad. I can also smell the odor of hair oil. My kids are going through puberty and the hair smell is especially potent. I have a very strong sense of smell. Can't wear anything with perfume and get migraines from strong odors. I notice odors all the time at work and people think I'm crazy because they can't smell what I smell.

You cannot smell when someone is wearing a maxi pad unless the "someone" is a corpse that's been rotting outside for three days. Again, be for real.

I'm not that PP but dried blood definitely has an odor. Dogs can certainly smell it ever notice how they go straight for the crotch? It's not too unbelievable that someone with a very keen sense of smell might pick up on it.

It is extremely unbelievable. I do believe that dogs go for crotches because there are interesting smells (pee, feces, sex, blood) for them. However, their sense of smell is 1000 times keener than any human’s. Are you suggesting you can smell as well as dogs? If so, you should join search and rescue; maybe you can help find lost people if they are on their period.

A beagle can smell the presence of a mouse in an acre cornfield. Like them, DCUM Period Bloodhounds can smell a period from the other end of the room, it seems totally believable to me.

That's what kills me is we were all being extremely charitable and being like, "You can't smell a maxi pad unless it's days old." But PP never said she could smell maxi pads. She literally said she could smell when someone was on their period. Like that cat that can sniff out who will get Parkinson's. Effing psychotic.

Sorry you’re worried now you stink.

I don't worry I stink. I'm more worried about encountering weird perverts who claim they can smell periods.

Uh huh. Every bodily fluid has an odor except period blood. Keep trying to tell yourself that. Hope you load up on scented feminine products.

But it is wild to go from “I can smell scented products” to “I smell periods.” I mean one in four women of middle age are on their period at any given time, I am positive they can’t smell that out of a lineup!

What is this idea that period blood doesn’t have any kind of scent? Are people that worried and defensive that they might put off odors others can detect? Of course they can. Body fluids can smell. Breath, BO, oily scalp, all can smell. If you eat a diet heavy in garlic people will know. Some can smell tonsil stones. Good hygiene is important.

Something that many on this thread do not have.

Ah yes, because they wash their hair every other day instead of every day.

Enjoy the bird's nest you call hair.

I have stick straight hair. There are only two states: clean, shiny and bouncy or flat, greasy and dull. Why are the frizzy dried hair people giving advice to fine straight hair people? Stick to what you know.

You sound insane.

I'm super glad you get pissed off about things like someone else's maxi pad or hair.

You’re so defensive lol. If you didn’t know it was true you wouldn’t be obsessively responding and projecting your insecurities.
