Both Barbenheimers are getting excellent reviews

Mattel is behind it. It’s the first in their push to make multiple movies based on their toys. I find that really unappealing, despite Greta Gerwig.

Never heard of Greta.

Also, there were already many Mattel toys in all the Toy Story movies.

It looks ok, but I don't feel convinced that we needed a Barbie movie or that I should go see it. Why is this getting pushed so hard? Who is funding this uncommonly large PR barrage?

I am aware of Gerwig and Baumbach and like to watch both Robbie and Gosling, but I don't find Barbie at all compelling.
The $100M marketing budget alone means this movie has to make a GiGANTIC amount of money this weekend to recoup that investment. Mattel is also hinging an entire marketing plan to revitalize their toys on this movie. I have never seen this amount of obvious corporate shilling.

+1

Viewer here - can't recommend this movie. Went to see it for nostalgia purposes, I loved Barbie - cut her hair, etc. Back in the day we only had one or two - no having more than that, generally. My daughter (now a teen) had a bunch (because of me) and never took to Barbie. She is seeing it this weekend with her friends.

People who attended where I was were into it - dressed in pink, etc. I really wanted to like the movie, but almost walked out in the first 20 minutes - something I never do (nor do I send food back, as a reference). I appreciated the emotional tug re: the mom story line, but other than that, I got nothing.

Agree with other PP that there is a LOT of money they need to recoup for this movie.

PP here. To add, my favorite character was Kate McKinnon, for reference.

People are going to be so disappointed if it doesn't flop. I waited until yesterday to buy tickets for this weekend. I could barely find 2 seats together for any of the multiple showings at 2 different theaters. I suspect the movie is going to do alright.

NP. Saw it today. What a depressing disappointment. I was expecting and hoping to love it. It was probably one of the saddest movies I’ve seen this year instead.

I’m not the PP but I also almost walked out — and I went to the theater dressed in full pink, with girlfriends.

The reason was that it was a truly depressing movie. I was hoping for some nostalgic fun, I got badly done heavy-handed existential corporatism. Oppenheimer was more entertainment. Barbie was … grim. Really, really grim.

Heading toward $150M opening, $300m worldwide. Massive.

I'm not sure whether the PPs were thinking that this was going to be a bubble gum comedy? Gerwig was always going to bring social commentary.

Gerwig’s prior movies had social commentary but were still entertaining. This was wholly tedious, devoid of any joy. I honestly am shocked at how bad it was. The movie makes the worst mistake a movie can make: it assumes the audience is stupid.

I’m sure it will have a big opening. I’m not sure it will have staying power.

We loved it!

I loved the first half and felt the second half dragged a bit. The first half had a lot of joyful silliness to balance out the “big problem” but then the second half had quite a load in tackling said problem. The backgrounds and music and costume design were all a complete delight. I want to watch it with my mom, an accomplished seamstress, just to hear her reactions to the Barbie outfits.

I’m going to go watch coverage of the USWNT and the women’s World Cup in general to get that disaster of a movie out of my mind. Ugh. I need a palate cleanser.
