I've been kind of underwater and don't understand why there is such a veritable blizzard of clearly over-the-top marketing-driven buzz about this movie. It looks ok, but I don't feel convinced that we needed a Barbie movie or that I should go see it. Why is this getting pushed so hard? Who is funding this uncommonly large PR barrage? I am aware of Gerwig and Baumbach and like to watch both Robbie and Gosling, but I don't find Barbie at all compelling.
The $100M marketing budget alone means this movie has to make a GiGANTIC amount of money this weekend to recoup that investment. Mattel is also hinging an entire marketing plan to revitalize their toys on this movie. I have never seen this amount of obvious corporate shilling.
People are going to be so disappointed if it doesn't flop. I waited until yesterday to buy tickets for this weekend. I could barely find 2 seats together for any of the multiple showings at 2 different theaters. I suspect the movie is going to do alright.
yeah it’s doing all right all right!
