To your first point, we live in a city where we give billionaires billions in tax dollars for sporting stadiums, and in a nation that spends trillions invading little desert nations. A million per day to save dozens of lives and make the city livable seems like a downright bargain in comparison. As for you second point, actually we do want our city's autonomy compromised. The city demonstrates over and over again that it is not capable of running a government at the 101 level. Given the long and successful history of appointed mayors and the Control Board, sticking with this failed experiment in home rule is foolish. |
We are not your colony for you to rule over. Go fork yourself. |
How long do you think the federal government can keep paying $1 million a day? A few months? A year? Indefinitely? |
You are an idiot. The reason we got home rule was because the appointed mayors were terrible. Please bless us with your great knowledge of what is so terrible about DC. Do we have crime? Sure, all cities do. We also have an amazing art scene, restaurants and educated people. Our population increases every year. So what is it not capable of running? |
Walter E Washington was terrible and the city made him the first elected mayor after he let the city burn. We also name stuff after him still. In fact our population hasn’t recovered from his first term while the metro area has nearly tripled in size. Are you under the impression that the DC government runs the arts and restaurant scenes and creates an educated population? There is basically no one in this city that can be called educated that was educated by DC (DCPS+UDC). And if you think DC crime is acceptable it’s probably because you’ve never traveled to a real world-city or even a mid-sized capital like Oslo. |
Gosh I've been to London and Paris and I think DC is safer than either. But maybe they're not real capital cities? Or maybe you just meant Oslo is whiter? Not sure what you meant. |
You can't compare ANY American city to a European city. It's apples and oranges. I have one son who attended DCPS - you are clearly FOS. He got the same education as my other son who went charter then private. UDC has an amazing law school. I am a lawyer. I didn't go to UDC but they produce really good lawyers. I work for a large private organization but I spent 2 years in DC government. I met a lot of really smart dedicated people. I met really dumb people. Could DC be run better - sure. But so could NYC and other large cities. |
DC has something like 10x the murder rate of those cities. So something is off with your perception. |
And the US has something like ten times the murder rate of those countries. The gun issue is nationwide, and worse in red states. |
UDC is tied for the worst rated law school in the country with some Puerto Rican schools. I never thought I’d see someone defend it here. People in DC just have really low expectations and want to keep it that way. |
The gentrification in the recent past was great, right? |
Crime is just part and parcel of living in a large metropolis. A rich and vibrant metropolis, I might add. Crime is just the way it is. And what’s so bad about that? What’s really wrong with murder, rape, and 975 carjackings per year? Don’t you know there is no right or wrong? So-called “crime” is merely a social construct. MYOB and stop complaining. |
UDC has a great reputation for public interest law. Again, I didn't go to UDC, but I respect it. The question is whether their students pass the bar. I'm curious, are you a lawyer? I know Harvard lawyers that are dumb as bricks. I know UDC lawyers who are really smart. Grit means a lot. Cost means a lot too. It is not worth spending $300k on a law school education. It also depends on what you want to do with the degree. You are trash. |
I've been here since Marion Barry. D.C. has never been run well. |

The fact that the Venn diagram of people saying: "what's wrong with a military occupation of a US city and sending anonymous masked men without badges to abduct people off the street with zero due process if it reduces crime a little" and people that said "how dare the government ask me to stay home for a little while and get vaccinated to lessen the impact of a deadly global pandemic" is a circle shows how deeply unserious they are.
They know the occupation of DC is wrong. They know they would never, ever stand for these sorts of extreme measures if it was targeting them (and we know it for a fact because it literally happened and they wouldn't shut up about it). They persist with the "Oh so you love crime if you don't like the occupation?" nonsense that they know is nonsense because they have no morals or principles and no actual policy goals other than "owning the libs." They are brainless NPCs and can be ignored without consequence. |
