What's wrong with landscaping?

Well, uprooting National Guard troops from their families and sending them to another state to use a leaf blower to clear a plaza doesn't seem like a good use of their time. Hiring local landscapers would be more cost effective and less disruptive to our troops.

Its pretty obvious the city and Union Station have gotten much nicer over the last month+ Its instructive that you've been reduced to carping about gardening.

Meanwhile, murder is down bigly, and I don't even see people jumping fare-gates anymore. The whole city just feels nicer. Its amazing what happens when law and order gets more than just lip-service.

It’s not pretty obvious. Union Station has been much better for a while.

And here we have someone that doesn’t think the $600 hammer can pound nails…

Yes, we don't want our government's money wasted and misused, nor do we want our autonomy as a city compromised. Is this surprising to anyone? It shouldn't be.

To your first point, we live in a city where we give billionaires billions in tax dollars for sporting stadiums, and in a nation that spends trillions invading little desert nations. A million per day to save dozens of lives and make the city livable seems like a downright bargain in comparison.

As for you second point, actually we do want our city's autonomy compromised. The city demonstrates over and over again that it is not capable of running a government at the 101 level. Given the long and successful history of appointed mayors and the Control Board, sticking with this failed experiment in home rule is foolish.

You are an idiot. The reason we got home rule was because the appointed mayors were terrible. Please bless us with your great knowledge of what is so terrible about DC. Do we have crime? Sure, all cities do. We also have an amazing art scene, restaurants and educated people. Our population increases every year. So what is it not capable of running?

Walter E Washington was terrible and the city made him the first elected mayor after he let the city burn. We also name stuff after him still.

In fact our population hasn’t recovered from his first term while the metro area has nearly tripled in size.

Are you under the impression that the DC government runs the arts and restaurant scenes and creates an educated population? There is basically no one in this city that can be called educated that was educated by DC (DCPS+UDC).

And if you think DC crime is acceptable it’s probably because you’ve never traveled to a real world-city or even a mid-sized capital like Oslo.

You can't compare ANY American city to a European city. It's apples and oranges. I have one son who attended DCPS - you are clearly FOS. He got the same education as my other son who went charter then private. UDC has an amazing law school. I am a lawyer. I didn't go to UDC but they produce really good lawyers. I work for a large private organization but I spent 2 years in DC government. I met a lot of really smart dedicated people. I met really dumb people. Could DC be run better - sure. But so could NYC and other large cities.

UDC is tied for the worst rated law school in the country with some Puerto Rican schools. I never thought I’d see someone defend it here. People in DC just have really low expectations and want to keep it that way.

UDC has a great reputation for public interest law. Again, I didn't go to UDC, but I respect it. The question is whether their students pass the bar. I'm curious, are you a lawyer? I know Harvard lawyers that are dumb as bricks. I know UDC lawyers who are really smart. Grit means a lot.

Cost means a lot too. It is not worth spending $300k on a law school education. It also depends on what you want to do with the degree.

You are trash.

Your line line just ruined all of the credibility you thought you had "lawyer".

Yes, but there are also legit safety issues in the locations they've picked. I don't even take the train to NY anymore because I don't want to deal with Union Station, especially at night.

The National Guard is there, and you don't feel safe??

I don't buy it that Starbucks give two sh-ts about their employees. You can tell because they only give two shirts for a five-day week. There are FIVE days and not TWO.

They are not closing down due to crime. LOL If they made money at these stores, they'd keep them open no matter what. And they certainly would not close them up to keep their employees safe.

Families who are victims of crimes, or worse, would respectfully disagree.

Starbucks is closing 450 stores. They said due to poor performance but I know its due from crime.

Remind me again how National Guard troops doing yardwork for millions of dollars a month helps crime victims? I'm just not following.

9 murders since August 12 says otherwise when there were 100 murders from January 1 to August 12. But continue to delude yourself that crime hasn’t gone down since the NG came in. There could be 0 murders from August 12 to December 31 and a significant portion of this forum would still pretend crime wasn’t down. They are that beholden to their political biases.

I just heard Starbucks boarded up all their stores in Baltimore and laid off their employees. Ninety restaurants have closed their doors too. Downtown has become a ghost town. You think DC got bad, Baltimore is three times worst.

I walk by a Starbucks everyday when I go to Panera. The Starbucks is always empty. No one sitting in there. I get at Panera and a line is all the way out the door waiting to order. Also, they don't charge for a second or third cup while you sit there doing your work. You can't beat that.

They are closing hundreds across the country.
