College age dc was labeled a kid who "just catches every little thing", and a kid with a "weaker immune system". Sick all through school, would literally catch anything going around and if you're kid was out for a day, he was out for 5-7. Finally this fall I pushed for more info since he was in college and the days he was missing was not going to work. We were sent to a pulmonologist who after 3 minutes saw he had a severe case of H1N1 in 2009, and immediately put him on a variety of breathing meds. He hasn't been sick since (an amazingly long amount of time for them). So now he will be in a lifetime treatment for asthma and lungs that aren't 100% healthy. Do I worry for DC? Yes. Do I want him in a mask forever? No. He will always have to be vigilant, but this is going to be forever (for him and all of us). We still mask in places with a lot of people we don't know, but no longer in other places. We're making our decisions based on what we think is reasonable and trying to not base it on fear, even having seen the effects. That's my take. Also, I hope this helps another parent if you see a child struggling 5-10 years down the road that had it, just keep pushing. I also hope it's very rare, but if its your 1 kid, I hope you get treatment and answers sooner than we did. |
I agree. You have to remember trolls on this board. When a pregnant woman dies it made news and national at that so no do not believe all these pregnant people were dying especially if they were vaccinated. |
Why stop there? |
Full body hazmat suit! You can never be too safe. |
+1 Also, switch to an up-armored Humvee to drive around in. Car accidents kill a lot of people. |
I'm not PP but I just Googled it. More than 200 pregnant women have died - just over that number through Nov 2021. Don't forget that many women have also died right after giving birth who wouldn't be counted in this tally. https://www.abc15.com/news/coronavirus/40-of-pregnant-woman-deaths-from-covid-19-happen-in-last-6-months-per-new-cdc-data |
What's the breakdown by state? |
Because masking, if you use the right kinds and wear them properly, works and is really not a big deal/hassle for many of us. But you knew that. You are just being a trolly a-hat. |
I am sorry to hear about your son's situation. I am not sure what point you are trying to make, but what this story exemplifies is that long-term effects can happen after many viruses, especially when it was a severe case like your son't flu infection. I once had a protracted bronchitis after a viral infection, and it took me a year to fully get over the shortness of breath that lingered. I was worried back then to end up with chronic asthma. It is not unique to Covid, and it is thankfully a rare thing to happen. |
| I will stop wearing them indoors when I am no longer required to at work. I work at the NIH, and they are still required there indoors even though they just changed the density guidance. I trust the leadership at the NIH to know better than any county executive or other politician and certainly better than the anti-masker idiots on DCUM. |
| I just went to the FH Wholefood for the first time since last weekend. Suddenly, I saw multiple people unmasked, including some of the employees. This wasn't the case at Wholefoods the last time the mandate fell. So I think people are coming around to unmasking in larger numbers now. |
For the 100th time, Covid numbers have certainly been on the decline but it is not yet at its lowest rate of infection SO I will continue to mask to protect myself and others who are more vulnerable. It costs me nothing in terms of time or effort. It doesn't bother me physically or emotionally. I am not a germaphobe. I am not severely vulnerable. I am triple vaxxed. And I know people who have struggled with Covid who are the same as me. So there ya go. I don't care if you choose not to mask. I will to continue to mask indoors until I know that the risk for myself, my family, and others is at its lowest. |
Google is your friend. |
| I’ll continue to mask indoors in public places for awhile. Numbers are lower but not super low. Wearing a mask is so easy and doesn’t bother me, so why wouldn’t I just throw it on while running errands? The quarantine part of covid is really disruptive; when my family had it our quarantine was long and my kids missed a ton of school. If I can avoid that again by masking in public places, I certainly will. FWIW I ran a lot of errands in Bethesda today and everyone was masked. |
| Maybe never. Not counting the days. I went in a store the other day and the owner didn’t have a mask on and was musing about it. I will wear a mast until I don’t and don’t care whether I’m judged or not. |
