When are you going to stop wearing masks indoors (stores, etc)

Because I sincerely don't understand why people continue to wear masks indoors in these circumstances. I'll just ask - why then?

Because cases are not low, OP. People are still dying in large numbers. The USA has the highest Covid mortality of ALL wealthy nations, because its people are emotionally immature, refuse delayed gratification, are bad at math and are somewhat lacking in moral fiber.

You can choose to reject all these things, and never experience anyone in your circle dying from Covid. You may never catch Covid. You may have had a very mild case and believe that all cases are mild.

I don't care. I will do the right thing. You will do the wrong thing, persuaded you're not a bad person. We will agree to disagree.

You think that me not wearing a mask in Safeway, with NO indication or reason to believe that I'm sick with covid (or anything), makes me a bad person? Really? You actually believe this?

+1. My brother and family are going to Arizona on vacation because they do not want to have a mask mandate. Arizona has the second highest per capita death rate from Covid. Choice is theirs of course.

I will proudly follow the lead of Stacey Abrams and Gavin Newsom, drop my mask in a trash can and not worry if you think I’m a bad person.

Second highest. Also, the states that follow - their numbers aren't much lower.

Because people like you glare at me when I don't wear a mask in the store and tell your children that people like me are selfish morons.

NP. I do not glare or make comments. If your problem is actually with people glaring and making comments, then say that. Somebody minding their own business while wearing a mask is not hurting you in any way.

May 2021. I usually have to hunt and search for one around the house if I have a doctor appointment/plane ride.

I fully agree. Why do people like OP get so bothered by other people wearing a mask?! My theory is that it they want to believe the pandemic is over (as do we all) so any reminder of its existence makes them uncomfortable. But we have to deal with the medical reality that is, not what we want it to be.

By the way, I have a healthy, active friend with no pre-existing conditions who is just recovering from a Covid pneumonia. It was technically a "mild case" of Covid (i.e. no hospitalization) but it still was a rough five weeks for him. Also: his family's cases, and most others I know from the omicron wave, aren't included in government statistics because they used home tests. So you bet I'm going to wear a mask.

In a store, airport, metro, or crowded area - for a long time. Maybe forever. People are nasty.

At work where everyone is 3x vaccinated, and we have no Covid spread, I'm finished wearing a mask as of today.

I would never go maskless in USA.

What about South Korea? New Zealand? Sure. I would go maskless.

Why? Because since 2016, it has been eye opening to see how dumb USA is and how terrible their K-12 education system is. I have to protect myself because people here are all kinds of uneducated and backwards.

Wow! I saw the topic and was planning to give a well-thought out response. Then I read the original post and saw that OP doesn't seem to want that. So, the short version is I'll continue to monitor the situations I'm in, the overall risks of things like COVID, and adjust my behavior accordingly.

Anonymous wrote:I'm all for masking up if you're sick and absolutely must go out, but it's really getting ridiculous for everyone to be wearing masks without any indication that they're sick or contagious. AND we have vaccines that overwhelmingly, hugely reduce the severity is virtually everyone.

If a business requires it, the obviously respect the owner's wishes. But as a general trend, at what point can we agree that wearing a mask to run an errand is necessary? I say that as someone who is an essential employee and works in person. And I will go on record saying that it's also essential to see people's faces and expressions, at the very least because it's a big form of human communication. And I also say this as someone with Muslim family members who wear niqab (face coverings) - it's a human benefit to see each other's faces as a default (and not mask as the default)

Are you really that much of a germphobe? Are you really severely vulnerable and not vaccinated? Or are you doing it because everyone's doing it? If so, when are you doing to stop with masking indoors? I don't understand why societally, we're continuing to mask when feeling healthy.

It's so bold of you to go "on record" with your stance on an anonymous message board.

Once things settle down more into endemic status. I'm fully expecting new variants. I don't think things are where they're going to settle into at this point.

So I could drop the mask, I guess. I probably won't die, but I might have to stay home from work, cancel vacations, miss something important....and I just don't want to do that. So I'll keep masking.

I would love a well thought out, sensible response. Can you share it?

I’ll continue to wear it as long as my friend who is an ER doctor recommends it. She has talked about the pain of holding someone’s hand as they die from COVID. As long as the majority our healthcare providers (and teachers) are asking us to wear masks I will. It is so little to ask for what they have to go through.
