Season 2 is somehow better so far -- which isn't saying much because it's still terrible. But it's growing on me. |
It’s the perfect mindlessly enjoyable show for me. I was new to this genre but was initially pulled in because of the setting. My 2x great grandmother worked for one of the families on “the 400” list so I was curious about the upstairs/downstairs dynamics. This season is living up to my expectations so far. Bertha’s reaction at the end of this week’s episode — the drama!

I am glad I stuck with this show through a season one that started off slow with a high cringe factor. Season 2 seems better -and the over-the-topness- whether intended or not - gives it an almost Succession flavor in that I’m laughing or amused during the “serious” scenes and I sort of love this about it. It’s def one I look forward to each week. |
DP. I was just coming here to say how incredibly boring that storyline is. Good grief - the nattering on about the stupid opera boxes, and the UTTERLY ridiculous Nathan Lane Foghorn Leghorn character. Seriously???? I’m so embarrassed for him. Also annoyed at the fact that it’s all one big set - and so fake looking. Downton Abbey was at least filmed in real houses and towns. |
I love her too - however, I think she was horribly miscast in this role. Too modern. I loved her in The Leftovers. |
Why can't they just speak like real people? The dialogue is so stilted and poorly written. |
This show should be renamed The Real Housewives of the Gilded Age. |
Does every woman have to wear a white dress with a rose print on it? Does Meryl's daughter always have to wear yellow? |
Has Meryl’s daughter’s acting skills improved? |
I continue to hate-watch this show. Honestly, it amazes me that Julian Fellowes created both this AND Downton Abbey. There is just no comparison. Downton Abbey was filmed in real places, not just large, very obvious sets - and it had real dialogue, not whatever it is they're doing on the Gilded Age. It annoys me SO MUCH, and yet I will continue watching. |
It’s okay. Definitely watchable. Some actors are horrible though: - the interim lady’s maid - Streep’s daughter - the female news reporter - the one-time drunk head butler - the Duke - Cynthia Nixon Some are good: - clock fixing servant - grouchy servant who doesn’t like the news reporter or the clock fixer - the gay son/banker - the minister |
It is not all one big set. Many of the interior rooms are filmed in the mansions of Newport. They splash it all over the place if you tour the mansions. And this season a lot was filmed in Newport and particularly Marble House. The locals talked a lot about it when we visited this summer. |
The Alabama plot is just ridiculous. |
Is it? I am from Alabama and the older generations in my family can tell you many stories of similar interactions. |
No doubt. But I doubt they hid in a barn and then kissed rapturously while a lynch mob was on the way. |
