+1. It really was bad … and I love period costume dramas |
Will someone please explain why Peggy Scott was dismissed from Aunt Agnes's employ/home? She didn't have an illegitimate child, she was married. So there wasn't any "scandal" at all. I couldn't figure out what the problem was. |
She wasn't dismissed. She left on her own accord. Mrs. Van Rhijn wanted her to stay and asked her a few times, but Peggy refused to continue to deal with the animus of her employer's maid. |
Ah, got it. Mrs. Van Rhijn really should have sacked the maid. |
Anyone watching Season 2? The first episode is out. It really is so simple-minded and silly, but still I watch. |
I watched. I agree it is fluff but that is why i watch it lol. It is so funny to me to think of the opening of a new opera house being such a huge controversy. |
Just commenting that old versus new NY was a real thing. After all, Wharton made it a central theme for a reason. So that is historically accurate, it's the modern audience who doesn't care. Even Downton isn't that accurate on purpose to make it watchable for a modern audience.
I knew the show was doomed because Fellowes created it and he has never shown an understanding of Americans. Which we see on Downton with Cora and her mother. |
It may be doomed but it sure is pretty. |
Streep's daughter is unbearable.
She is so bland and lifeless. Her lines are so stilted. Im out |
I love watching this show because I just turn my brain off. It's shallow and dumb but I love the costumes and sets, plus I do actually like a few of the performances (Christine Baranski for sure, but also Nathan Lane kind of cracks me up and the guy who plays Oscar brings a lot more to that role than I might expect). I also actually do like some of the "downstairs" drama, like the horrible racist maid who can't bring herself to be nice to a black person even to save her job, and the dueling butlers in the two households who grudgingly come to respect each other.
Of the "upstairs" drama, I am somewhat indifferent to Meryl Streep's daughter as an actress, but her character is SO poorly written. Meanwhile, Cynthia Nixon is so grating and insipid in this role, ugh. Why. I want to like Carrie Coons and the guy who plays her husband, because I love her in everything and he seems intriguing, but something about them is boring to me. And yet I still watch it. I never made it past one season of Downtown Abbey, but I do actually find the premise of this one more interesting because NYC was a really interesting place in this era. But they focus too much on some of the worst characters. |
It’s HBO Max anyone with ATT Cell phone gets it for free |
I can’t watch this season. I couldn’t get through the first episode. Bad writing, even worse acting, blech! Just awful! |
I only watch to ogle the Russell's houses, Bertha's wardrobe, and Larry.
|
The costumes are so EXTRA this season...! But the costumes and Carrie Coon's accent are the only things to love. |
There's something so compelling about Carrie Coon. I can't take my eyes off of her. |
