I mean, I don't have kids by choice but I also think that human life has meaning. You can think that life has meaning and also not want to birth or raise a child. |
What if your child ended his or her life someday? |
Mother Theresa hated human life so she never had kids. </s> |
100% true….I just don’t think it says anything good about our society when higher and higher numbers of people aren’t interested in reproducing. It doesn’t mean that they don’t value life. But do they want humans to disappear? Are they just betting enough people will have kids to keep the show going? |
Are you kidding me? We need to aim for zero population growth. Humans aren’t going to disappear. There are enough people dumb enough or disempowered enough to keep the human population going. Not everyone thinks through having children. You think your grandma deliberated over having kids? No, they just had sex without birth control and children get conceived. As a species that has the knowledge and wherewithal to know better, we need to do better. |
Humans will disappear someday. I don’t think the percentage of people uninterested in having kids has really increased. Making that choice is just easier now with more opportunities for women. I don’t have kids but I’m sure if I were born a few decades earlier I would have them. |
| I'm sorry but parents cannot take care of the kids that currently exist. I am a teacher and have made SO many CPS calls this year. My heart is sad helping children overcome so many burdens and obstacles to successful and happy lives. I have spent so much money on clothes, food and other things to help my children in need. I have no idea what is going on in the parents lives though. I try not to judge but they can return an email or phone call or pickup their sick kid from school. I am thankful that my kids will only have kids when they are 100% ready. My eldest never wants any. |
How should we handle a society with many many elderly and not very many young workers? Robots I guess? |
Elderly people can work like Fauci and Pelosi you know … |
Wow that must be a heavy burden. Thank you for going above and beyond as a teacher and caring for your neglected students. Is this wide spread neglect related to the opioid crisis? I read it became even worse during COVID. Or if not, why do you think it is happening ? |
I have children, but I would never assume that people who choose not to, do not find meaning in their lives. In fact, they may be able to not worry about as much mundane stuff as I need to, and be better able to pursue loftier goals. Both my children want children, but I would support them deciding not to, if they decide later that it is beyond their abilities to devote the level of care, attention and resources needed to raise children well. The world is a harsh place with many existential threats to wrestle with, whether we have children or not. |
My 51 yo sister lost her 17 yo to suicide. The kid was smart but troubled. Having children is a crap shoot. |
It really is. God knows how mind will turn out. My oldest is tough. Still, I have no regrets. A little Voltaire for you…. “I waxed old in misery and disgrace, having only one-half of my posteriors, and always remembering I was a Pope's daughter. A hundred times I was upon the point of killing myself; but still I loved life. This ridiculous foible is perhaps one of our most fatal characteristics; for is there anything more absurd than to wish to carry continually a burden which one can always throw down? to detest existence and yet to cling to one's existence? in brief, to caress[Pg 53] the serpent which devours us, till he has eaten our very heart?” |

The wrong people are having children. If we just passed a law that only college educated US citizens who own a home, make 100k HHI or more and can pass a background check, psych exam and genetic testing can have children for as little as 10 years would improve our gene pool.
Also overpopulated counties and third world countries should take a complete 10 year break on having kids. Some extreme counties a 20 year break. |
Well, in that case, population growth will really dwindle. It's going to be too hard to enforce. But you're right...people like this lady in the article shouldn't be drawing from the public purse https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/medicaid-saved-me-from-financial-ruin-premature-twins-2021-11 |
