I’m good with this. I’ve been collecting guns since I was maybe 12 years old. I have over a hundred of them of various types, mostly modern stuff that many people here probably wouldn’t like. I think such a class should be about as elaborate/lengthy as the training process for getting a driver’s license. Say 40 hours classroom time, and 40 hours range time, with exams for each. The classes should be free, paid for by the current 11% federal excise tax on guns and ammunition that is already in place. Complete the classes and pass the tests, and you can own whatever you want, and carry whatever you want, nationwide. That seems fair to me. It’s onerous enough to discourage the irresponsible/lazy/criminals but yet still attainable for ordinary people seriously committed to responsible gun ownership.


I also think a voting license would be a good thing, too. Make it the exact same civics test that new naturalized citizens must pass. We should expect the same base of knowledge about our Republic from our natural-born citizens as we expect new Americans to have.


Make both of these part of the same Bill.

You are right. Guns are normal and always have been...IN AMERICA. Nowhere else in any civilized country. Are we comfortable with having the highest rate of gun ownership in the world? Are we comfortable with normalizing armed intruder drills in our schools from grade school on? A school shooting is an isolated, once-in-a-lifetime event in most countries--here it happens year round, every year. Why are we so different than other civilized nations on this matter?

Having a gun for protecting your house is normal in the US, yes. Having a six-figure arsenal and putting it on your Christmas card is not. There was a libertarian columnist at Reason magazine of all places who tweeted that he’s a proud gun owner but that stuff like this is gross; he was attacked and deleted the tweet.

I’m not sure why the Dollar amount of their gun collection bothers you. I doubt that people who can afford six figures worth of guns commit a meaningful percentage of gun crimes. I’d be more concerned about people for buy a $50 gun in an alley somewhere.

War on major narcotic drug cartels is more important than war on terrorism, Afghans, Iraq, Iran, etc.

Of the people who buy AR15s, two groups make up the bulk of the sales:

- Military vets (who are trained in gun safety) and

- law enforcement/ retired LEOs (also trained).
