Guns ARE normal. They always have been. 40% of households in the US have at least one gun in them (and those are only the households that freely admitted to having a gun). There are more AR15’s in America than there are minivans - ALL minivans, regardless of manufacturer. Remember that the next time you see a minivan. Many high schools have rifle or trap/skeet teams. There are likely 400,000,000 guns in America at this point. More than 1 per person. So yeah, guns are pretty ubiquitous. No one needs to normalize them. They’re already normal. |
It's like asking. Free speech why isn't someone doing something about it? |
I’m good with this. I’ve been collecting guns since I was maybe 12 years old. I have over a hundred of them of various types, mostly modern stuff that many people here probably wouldn’t like. I think such a class should be about as elaborate/lengthy as the training process for getting a driver’s license. Say 40 hours classroom time, and 40 hours range time, with exams for each. The classes should be free, paid for by the current 11% federal excise tax on guns and ammunition that is already in place. Complete the classes and pass the tests, and you can own whatever you want, and carry whatever you want, nationwide. That seems fair to me. It’s onerous enough to discourage the irresponsible/lazy/criminals but yet still attainable for ordinary people seriously committed to responsible gun ownership. I also think a voting license would be a good thing, too. Make it the exact same civics test that new naturalized citizens must pass. We should expect the same base of knowledge about our Republic from our natural-born citizens as we expect new Americans to have. Make both of these part of the same Bill. |
You are right. Guns are normal and always have been...IN AMERICA. Nowhere else in any civilized country. Are we comfortable with having the highest rate of gun ownership in the world? Are we comfortable with normalizing armed intruder drills in our schools from grade school on? A school shooting is an isolated, once-in-a-lifetime event in most countries--here it happens year round, every year. Why are we so different than other civilized nations on this matter? |
Having a gun for protecting your house is normal in the US, yes. Having a six-figure arsenal and putting it on your Christmas card is not. There was a libertarian columnist at Reason magazine of all places who tweeted that he’s a proud gun owner but that stuff like this is gross; he was attacked and deleted the tweet. |
I’m not sure why the Dollar amount of their gun collection bothers you. I doubt that people who can afford six figures worth of guns commit a meaningful percentage of gun crimes. I’d be more concerned about people for buy a $50 gun in an alley somewhere. My friend is into shooting sports and has a couple of $10,000 Italian shotguns. |

Ah, so the problems with Afghanistan, Colombia, etc were that they weren't violent enough. I'm sorry but this is insane. |
Of the people who buy AR15s, two groups make up the bulk of the sales: - Military vets (who are trained in gun safety) and - law enforcement/ retired LEOs (also trained). Enough with the ridiculous gun grabbing hysteria! How about some crime-control already? |
DP And this vessel protects herself, and her home, and her kids. With a gun. I’m 5’4” and 112 lbs soaking wet with boots on. I cannot match the physical strength of an average male, let alone a stronger-than-average male. So I have guns and training to negate that disparity. Don’t like that? Don’t care. No one is forcing you to own a gun. But you don’t get to force me not to own one, either. |
Why are we comfortable with gun violence being the second leading cause of death of children in the US? |
Except it’s not, unless you use the most tortured, cherry picked manipulation of statistics possible. Which is exactly what you’re citing in your “Everytown for gun safety” talking points. I know this because I get the same emails you do. Some examples: suicides are divided into two categories in this data package -“ firearm suicides”, and “all other suicides”. Why? Suicide is suicide. What difference does the means make? Why are firearm suicides counted as a separate event, while hanging, poisoning, intentional OD, bleeding, or jumping/falling all counted together as one? Why? Because it pads the numbers. Age. The data package counts every death up until age 19. 19? That’s an adult. There are lots of hardcore 19 year old gangbangers. Some of them get shot doing gangbanger stuff. That’s an occupational hazard. But it sure helps with padding the numbers, doesn’t it? Of course it does. Remove the figures for suicides and homicides of 18 and 19 year olds engaged in criminal activity, and the actual death rate of children by firearm is somewhere at or below “chronic lower respiratory disease”. I massage statistical data for a living. I can spot manipulated data as easily as a dermatologist can spot melanoma on someone in line in front of them at the grocery checkout. |
Gangbangers? Whew, who needs a dog whistle when you have a bull horn. Oh, suicide by any other form then gun take a lot of effort and are painful. They are when someone really wants to die. Suicide by gun are impulsive and can be avoided if there were no guns around |
Thank you. Everytown and Brady/Handgun Control Inc. lie with statistics constantly. Glad you called them out on their distortions. |
