How to get a job at Netflix or Google? Do they hire folks who only have DoD experience? (But on old technology). However, I am a hard worker and learn quickly (smart if I say so myself and get all with most folks) so definitely can pick up new skills - not sure if I can get hired without these skills but can't get them in the current job.

Those are top jobs. You'd need to impress in an interview.

As a dev? You need relevant experience to get an interview then you have to pass the interview. Many engineers get interviews but it's not easy to crack them.

Netflix pays 450k cash and only hire senior level engineers.

Has to be more than that now. I remember hearing the 450k figure thrown around even 4-5 years ago but big tech salaries have increased a lot since then. Netflix is a place that will fire you at the drop of a hat too.

What kind of skills does a senior level engineer need? What is in demand?

If you are asking this on DCUM, Netflix won’t be in the cards for you. They are ruthless.

But post questions on Hacker News for more general career advice.

Agree. I don't have the skills to join Netflix as I am working in old technology for too long. If I don't have programming skills but have the ability to get a TS (with full scope poly) and other good skills, wonder if I should get a non programming job in these companies even if I start from a lower level and work my way up. Would the pay be worth it?

I can’t see any reason Netflix would want a TS, but AWS and Azure with gov support would use it, but I doubt pay will be that stellar

Yes, Netflix is not possible. it might be better to stay in government sector with another company but unless you have top skills, Amazon and Microsoft will be hard to get in now. My friend joined Google ten years old, I should have followed him.

AWS and Azure both pay a clearance bonus on top of the regular software engineer compensation. Typically around 40-60k. You can easily hit 300-400k TC in these positions.

Anyone know of any average students at mid tier or Low ranked comp sci schools, but able to get the right experience over time, land in any of these elite positions?

You have to be good at software engineering. Grades , after first job don’t matter. However, ability does. Communication skill helps some. I’m a software engineering mgr. some kids can produce amazing amounts of work. Others cannot. Some great resources from strayer. Sometimes shitty engineers at top 10 engineering schools. A great software engineer is 10x more efficient. If you want cash as your main objective, most mid skill plus can get it or job hop to get it. However, there’s a lot of shitty work out there. A lot of BS.

20 years in and I make 250k at a decent work balance. Do I want more $$$. Sure. Is it worth sacrificing my work / life for like 50-100k? I doubt it.

* to confirm. Modern software engineering 😅

DH directs sales ops for a small start-up and makes 150k.

A friend of mine is a Director of sales at a local tech company and makes 200k. He just turned 30.

DH is a Digital Director and makes $170k + bonus. I'm a Web Developer for non-profits and make $90k + bonus. I could 100% make a lot more elsewhere, but I love what I do, who I work with, have amazing benefits and flexibility. That has been exceedingly helpful during the past 3 years (mom had cancer in 2019, I was able to help her and my dad a lot during that time).

We both have great work/life balance and work from home. We're relocating this summer to an area with a COL far less than DC.

I didn’t know what I had till I left it… now I make 3x more but work 10x harder for it.
