Because faculty, staff and administrators on college campuses have been on the front lines of LGBTQ/gender identity violence, threats and deaths; both murders and deaths by suicide over the hopelessness of it all. I've had direct experience with this. As a result, I go out of my way to make it clear that if you need support or help, I'm here. I'm available. I'm a resource.

I get that you have a problem with that. You can draw any conclusions you want about me; I don't care. I'm not concerned about you. I AM concerned about the students I've had who walked through my door and needed my help.

When there's a suicide on campus, you think, "What can I do? What can WE do? How do we let students know that help is available." This is part of the answer.

^^And by the way? You judgmental parents should honestly be seeing this as a sign that the university takes all student lives very seriously, and does everything possible to keep all students safe, healthy, mentally healthy, comfortable and secure.

Again, it means little to nothing for your (probably white) straight son or daughter to occasionally be asked to share their pronouns if they want to. But it might just mean everything to some students: it means they know that the faculty, staff and administrators are willing to do all they can to make them feel included, safe, healthy and comfortable.
