ABC cancels 'Roseanne' after racist Twitter rant

LOL, this is everything

The same people mad about Roseanne's "free speech" being violated because she got fired for being blatantly racist were just celebrating the NFL forbidding players from silently and peacefully protesting during the National Anthem.

I was thinking the same thing. I am a middle-age Black woman. I loved the first iteration of the Roseanne show. There were two episodes in particular that really resonate with me 20 years later... 1) when DJ participated in teasing a Black girl in gym class; Roseanne let him have it, and 2) during the Rodney King riots in LA she and Tom Arnold's character were also looting AND she showed two Black characters from A Different World who weren't looting. I thought that those were very deliberate and thoughtful episodes and I really appreciated those storylines.

Fast forward... I just have a hard time believing that Roseanne was a closet, gross racist all those years. I didn't watch the "new" Roseanne because of everything that she's done and said since the first one went off the air. This whole thing makes me so sad. Valerie Jarrett, by all accounts, is a lovely, accomplished woman who doesn't deserve to be the focal point of her racist rhetoric; no one does. I mean... she literally DID NOT care about all of the people who earn a living working on her show. I'm sad because people like Roseanne just cannot process that the collateral damage does more harm to their ilk than their targets. Valerie Jarrett will be just fine. She will continue to earn a living. The people working on the Roseanne show that may have been out of work for a while or had an opportunity to resurrect a dormant acting career... she set those people back and affected their livelihoods.

Her racist views don't bother me as much as her disregard for how those views impact people that depended on her for a living.

I'm hopeful that this will be a shift that causes people to really rethink how they use their platform.

This is the story of a lot of older, angry Americans who have spent the last decade living off a steady diet of Fox News and #fakenews. They have zero perspective on the damage they are doing to America's reputation, economy, legacy, and institutions. And they won't be alive long enough to do the hard work of rebuilding. Roseanne is just the outgrowth of much bigger symptoms at play in American society.

Bless them Lord, for they know not what they do.

This! Comedians can insult people and make fun of them to get a laugh but that is totally different than the completely racist comment Rosanne made.

Well, what about black comedians that make fun of white people as a race in their stand-up routines? Is that allowed to "get a laugh?" That happens all the time.

Or what about when Chris Rock said "I want to live in a world with real equality. I want to live in a world where an equal amount of white kids are shot every month. I want to see white mothers on TV crying." That stand-up was released on Netflix right after the Florida shooting and no one batted an eye about it and Netflix never removed it, nor did Chris Rock apologize. Do you think that is okay too?

Bless them Lord? Religion is the cult of most racist's existence. It is one of their biggest rationales on their reasoning for being racist, bigot, and anti-LGBT. God's way.

I agree. I am white, but I actually liked the new reboot. DJ married a black woman, they were both military. She had a biracial grand daughter. Her grandson was gender nonconforming. The political views of the Metcalf and her and showing that you can have different views, but agree to disagree and still love each other. The pharmaceutical nightmares the elderly have. Healthcare issues. New administration really hasn't change anything for middle America (does it ever no matter who is in office?) She had Sara and Wanda helping her write these great story lines. You have the right side watching these story lines. It had so much potential. I just can not believe she wanted to be on a show sending out these messages to right wing America and she has been a racist all this time. I think people say and do stupid things in anger and racism seems to be an easy target to get under someone's skin. Both sides. Social media is a hate fest and will continue to be so. I am glad she had consequences, but I would have much rather her be killed off and let the show go on with Metcalf coming in to help the house. There are so many good people on that show and behind the scenes that just lost their jobs that did nothing. It sucks.

Stop normalizing and excusing ignorance/hate.

Yes, vile racists who have a large public following should be more careful because it might have financial implications for those who choose to work with a vile racist. Thanks.

I did not mean to imply that her being a vile racist is OK. I just meant that people like Roseanne are so blinded by their beliefs and hatred that they really aren't thinking straight; like a mental block of some sort. EVERYONE has some kind of prejudice but most people are smart enough to know that publicly revealing those have consequences. I mean... how deep is her level of hate and venom that she just don't care about the people that are close to her and the people who relied on her for employment. She had NO regard for the consequences. You can't change people and you can't make them believe something that they don't believe. However, what ABC did to her should be a BIG deterrent for people like Roseanne; hateful people who have the power to employ hundreds.

Agree. And the sad thing is, is that for as terrible a person she was, the team was actually writing a show more left centered that right was watching. So many Americans under the delusion of what "their America" is turning into and the hate that it produces. I have always said that college needs to be free in America and get these kids out from their umbrella of learned family behavior and to a 4yr college to learn life and social skills more than anything. Just as you are baptized into a religion you may not want to follow, or have a circumcision you may have never wanted, or have your ears pierced as an infant if you didn't want them, or being born into a family of bigots or racists. You as a child, can not change that. It is learned behavior that you just assume is right thru a vicious cycle of learned behavior from your parents and theirs, etc... Not many people change their views, religion, or beliefs once they are in their 20's sadly. Most people don't leave from a 20 mile radius they were born and raised. I think having kids away at college around all walks of life, races, cultures, religions, is an eye opening experience that is sorely needed for this country. Otherwise they live in their bubble and find hatred online. Sadly only the rich can send their kids to college and that is another learned behavior that needs to change.

The only people who believe and say everyone has some kind of prejudice are people who are trying to convince themselves that THEIR bigotry is normal .Speak for yourself

Prejudice = Prejudice is an affective feeling towards a person or group member based solely on that person's group membership.
Bigot = a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Because you're dense. I'll say it again. Everyone has some kind of prejudice. It is human. You are not automatically a bigot because you have a prejudice toward someone. You have to act on the prejudice. Publicly revealing those prejudices have consequences. Don't twist my words or the meaning behind them.

E.g., I'm prejudice against you because I believe that only white people over 55 use the term bigot. I'm saying it anonymously on DCUM and I will not share (action) that opinion publicly because I fear the consequences.

I think that what Chris Rock is saying is that if an equal amount of white kids were shot every month, something would be done about it. Rather than being racist himself, he is highlighting the racism that exists in our society that allows black kids to be murdered on a regular basis with no publicity, yet goes 24/7 wall to wall coverage over white kids being shot. He is making a social comment. Can you tell me what social commentary Roseanne was offering when she compared Jarrett to an ape?

Again, white people trying to demonstrate their oppression is a very sad sight. You don't know how well you have it.

And now Trump denounces the CEO for not calling him when horrible things were said (his moronic words) instead of denounced a BLATANT RACIST Roseanne! Shows where his heart lies.

Stupid people don’t understand barbed political comedy. Is it any wonder there are so few talented conservative comics. Larry the Cable Guy might be your speed. Psst ... he’s a fraud too.
