They are still transgender at that point. They would still be affected. Anyway, Trump just pulled this out of his ass - he's not looking for a way to balance any legitimate concerns about safety or cost against the equal rights or the need for more capable soldiers to enlist. He's just pandering to some far right nutters to placate them since he doesn't have his stupid wall. |
Here's the thing. Distracting or not, this is a big deal to transgender people. He could shoot someone in Times Square and you could say we fell for a distraction, but what's the alternative, to not care? |
Here's the thing: This is a big deal to the military mission. There are plenty of other ways for transgenders to serve. They can be civilian employees, etc. |
What is the military mission? How does this affect the military mission? Thanks. |
| You cannot accommodate every segment of our population nor should you. Less that 4% of the population in the US is LGBT with about a third of 1% being transgender. We all have rights but we cannot all be guaranteed everything. |

a little off-topic--but on the subject of unintended consequences |
Part of it includes war. War includes being out for long periods of time on firebases or at camps. In war zones with lots of tough issues. People in close quarters. Even in the best of circumstances it can be very, very tough. People who are working through personal issues have a tough time. I have not seen any transgender people who are not working through something. |
I hope the mission is and will always be keeping US citizens safe. Sort of like an air traffic controller. Keep the planes safe in the sky. I don't want a air traffic controller sick from his or her hormones or more worried about personal issues than the job at hand. |
Same reason for banning women, right? After all, we're affected negatively by hormones at least one week out of the month.
|
I'm so lucky to be a straight white male because we are never distracted by personal issues. Occasionally one of us goes on a shooting spree, but you can't blame hormones. |
I wouldn't trust myself with a rocket launcher on day 28. |
Suggest you read the twitter link posted earlier. The vet from the Iraqi firebase acknowledges that it is tough on everyone there--even the men. If you read it, I don't see how you cannot understand the issue. FWIW, women do not currently serve in that job. Almost no women are in the infantry at present. The rules with transgenders could be quite confusing. |
There are transgender members of the military now. Yet, the institution is not collapsing. |
And, it is highly unlikely that they are serving at firebases. We have a long way to go to work out the issues before this can happen. For example, women are not on firebases (rare exceptions, if any). So, if you are a transgender male would you be allowed to serve there? A transgender female? You don't understand the problems with this in very, very tight quarters? Ask most war vets--boredom, fear, and the day to day monotony are some of the biggest issues. There is a lot to be worked out first. Society is still having trouble with this. Let is go first. |
Your assumption is that suddenly all transgendered people are having "personal issues." Are all male service members on government-paid viagra too focused on fraternizing and having sex than the job at hand? |
