It was a hard call for FCPS, but looks like kids would be safer at school til the normal release time.

Yes kids would be safer in schools than on busses than in cars/walking outdoors.

But this isn’t about students safety, it’s about giving teachers more PTO.

Yeah kids are safer at school. Given the forecast yesterday that the severe storm will be around 2-6pm lets just keep the kids at “safer” school building till 6pm or better maybe let them overnight at school. Parents needs break too…

I’m an LCPS teacher who just spent 40 minutes in a tornado formation in the hall and now the SOL test has been interrupted and can’t resume. Hateeeeeee this

Meanwhile, in the real world, OPM has told federal workers to leave by 2 p.m. today. Almost every district in the DMV and Baltimore area has an early release. There is also an active tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warning for the area. But yes, FCPS having an early release today is clearly about giving teachers some extra time off.

So far, so good. It has stayed dry and calm up to this point.

Yeah, I can’t believe they’ve decided to keep students in a safe location. How irresponsible.

None of the federal employees whose kids are at LCPS are rushing to save them from the dangers of a full day at school.

Severe threat is now likely over until the cold front comes through later this evening. There were some storms (and tornado warnings) in Loudoun but nothing meaningful in Fairfax . . . mostly just tropical downpours. Hard to see any more significant storms popping up this afternoon without significant sun to destabilize the atmosphere.
