Go take a drive. I haven't seen a single cleared sidewalk and road lanes are only partially cleared. This was at 2 pm Monday.
Kids cant be walking to school in this mess

Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner/resident. Our community hired contractors to clear them and they are clear.

NP. And? The public sidewalks that are the responsibility of the county have a limited pool of workers available to clear them.

The county doesn't own the majority of land with sidewalks. Most is privately owned. You need to take a breath and maybe go outside and shovel your damn sidewalk.

Who is responsible for clearing the miles of bike paths in the county that students use to walk to school?

Feel free to call 311 to get an answer to that question. But I suggest you get some fresh air first. You need to calm down.

Oh i am perfectly calm because i am going to be paid to stay home all week and not deal with your moron feral kids. Have fun being stuck with them

It depends if we get more snow and it turns into ice. We have had multiple plows and we’ve dug out several times and right now all of it looks like no one has touched it. It’s bad.

Where are you located? We are in Wheaton. We are in an HOA and the contractors came once right after the sleet/freezing rain stopped. Sidewalks and street are completely clear.

At my office in Bethesda today, I live in Arlington. The streets and sidewalks look pristine. Some people busted their tails to make everything work and the school is still canceling 2 days already, maybe more to come. It's a joke and it's sending the wrong message to our kids. Don't even get me started on all the companies closing their offices because schools are closed. We have become so weak as a society, it's disgusting.

I detest people like you who pop up after every snowstorm to say that everything should open earlier because where you are it's all looking great.

I live in a SFH neighborhood a stone's throw from downtown Bethesda and it's a snowscape here.

And you know what? I'd send my kid to school in this mess, because we are from a cold climate, and we are equipped with snow boots and used to walking in the snow.

But I, unlike you, understand that some families are less-well equipped, and that some are less mobile, and some not used to these conditions at all.

I am personally hoping for a Thursday opening. My teen needs AP course instruction because her exams are in May no matter how many snow days we get in MCPS.

Man it's so hard to figure out why people hate teachers.

We're telling you how things stand in the majority of the county that doesn't have communities who hire contractors, but rely on county services instead.

We do this so you're not going to freak out when schools are still closed on Wednesday, or Thursday, or maybe even Friday.

But you're so blind to other people's realities that you're probably going to have a massive tantrum anyway. Just because YOUR neck of the woods is fine, you want schools to open. Well, better make plans, PP. It might not happen on our schedule.

Why would the county be responsible for clearing your sidewalks? You are responsible for clearing your own sidewalks or paying someone else to. And it must be done by tonight.

1. You are factually wrong. There are many county sidewalks.
2. On residential streets, many people are not clearing their sidewalks, tonight or ever. Sidewalks are not the criteria here. You can stop having a hissy fit about them.
3. The state of sidewalks is not the main issue. Schools have more important criteria: streets plowed and school parking lots cleared so buses can operate. They assume that once streets are all plowed and parking lots are cleared, there is a sufficient number of private households and businesses that will have cleared their sidewalks.

I didn't say there aren't county sidewalks, but the PP was claiming that the majority of county residents (everyone who doesn't "have communities who hire contractors") relies on the county to clear their sidewalks. I was saying that that's not true, people are responsible for clearing their own sidewalks. But yes of course, roads that don't have houses or businesses on them are the government's responsibility.

We can’t shovel our way out in the driveway or sidewalk because of the amount of ice. We did our best to shovel as precipitation happened but obviously not in the middle of the night. Our neighborhood streets haven’t been plowed and when they finally do it, it will create a big wall of snow we can’t drive over.

You're only contributing to the nastiness, which means backlash against teachers will be even worse. Not cool.

Nah, most parents don't get it. They shouldn't have had kids in the first place..-NP

Interesting way to put it. Some of these parents should try teaching one day.

Every parent on this forum apparently is an amazing parent but still somehow expects the schools and teachers to handle everything because the mere thought of these kids being home for more than 2 days a week terrifies them.

No way my little car can drive through that. It'll freeze more tonight and it's the bus route (includes several hills on the route as well) so I'm not optimistic.

You might be surprised what your car can drive on. It can drive on surfaces you might find hard to walk on.

Don't be lazy. You can absolutely shovel this. But yes, it will take longer than fluffy snow.

That sounds like an excellent way to test the airbags in your car

Same in our neighborhood in Silver Spring. Very unusual for us to not have been plowed yet.

Same for us in Bethesda. I can’t remember the last time it took so long for a plow to come down our street (still not plowed)
