The problem is MCPS is terrible at setting aside money to maintain their properties so they don't have to hire contractors to clean the properties they are responsible for. A couple of years ago I saw a bunch of school staff clearing a black top with shovels several days after snow ended. Ridiculous and not a good way to manage your properties. Huge liability risk.

Sorry that should say "so they can hire contractors"

They may have also put down sand or salt because what they didn't plow is melting with the sun now. Originally the county system said we'd be plowed by tomorrow afternoon so it's not really accurate. Maybe open with a delayed opening on Wednesday?

I hope you're right, but the slush will turn to ice overnight. And then the same thing will probably happen at smaller scale tomorrow night.

I think the county thing shows when they will be DONE. Any one of us might have the plow come by in five minutes. But the last one of us won't get a plow until sometime tomorrow, methinks.

We are in Chevy chase and have seen a plow go one way on one street near us exactly once. DH described it as looking like a bobsled run. Sidewalks aside, there's no way to run a school bus down this street. Heck, even the Ride On bus that usually passes our house hasn't started running yet.

I predict the county will close again on Wednesday to make sure everything is clear and delay on Thursday due to cold.

It depends if we get more snow and it turns into ice. We have had multiple plows and we’ve dug out several times and right now all of it looks like no one has touched it. It’s bad.

Where are you located? We are in Wheaton. We are in an HOA and the contractors came once right after the sleet/freezing rain stopped. Sidewalks and street are completely clear.

At my office in Bethesda today, I live in Arlington. The streets and sidewalks look pristine. Some people busted their tails to make everything work and the school is still canceling 2 days already, maybe more to come. It's a joke and it's sending the wrong message to our kids. Don't even get me started on all the companies closing their offices because schools are closed. We have become so weak as a society, it's disgusting.

Go take a drive. I haven't seen a single cleared sidewalk and road lanes are only partially cleared. This was at 2 pm Monday.
Kids cant be walking to school in this mess

Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner/resident. Our community hired contractors to clear them and they are clear.

We're telling you how things stand in the majority of the county that doesn't have communities who hire contractors, but rely on county services instead.

We do this so you're not going to freak out when schools are still closed on Wednesday, or Thursday, or maybe even Friday.

But you're so blind to other people's realities that you're probably going to have a massive tantrum anyway. Just because YOUR neck of the woods is fine, you want schools to open. Well, better make plans, PP. It might not happen on our schedule.

Why would the county be responsible for clearing your sidewalks? You are responsible for clearing your own sidewalks or paying someone else to. And it must be done by tonight.

Nobody lives on Montgomery Village Avenue and none of their sidewalks were cleared. People were walking in the road. Same goes for East Village Avenue and Wisteria in Germantown

Sidewalks to bus stops are not clear in our chevy chase neighborhood. side streets have clear roads only in the direct middle, enough for one car to go though at a time.
I predict weds delay.

That’s nice for you. Meanwhile, the streets haven’t even been plowed in my neighborhood. It’s a sheet of ice out there. I can see a snow emergency route from my window that has been plowed… twice total? There’s a narrow lane free for cars, but is otherwise a mess.

But you have pristine sidewalks, so I guess schools can open!

But you can get around easily,

NP. And? The public sidewalks that are the responsibility of the county have a limited pool of workers available to clear them.

The county doesn't own the majority of land with sidewalks. Most is privately owned. You need to take a breath and maybe go outside and shovel your damn sidewalk.

I did shovel my own sidewalk, you simpering moron. I’m not personally shoveling the sidewalks that are the responsibility of the county.

Half the people complaining probably live outside of US.

And what exactly is the right message to send to our kids? That they are unimportant and nobody cares about their safety because it might inconvenience some adults?

1. You are factually wrong. There are many county sidewalks.
2. On residential streets, many people are not clearing their sidewalks, tonight or ever. Sidewalks are not the criteria here. You can stop having a hissy fit about them.
3. The state of sidewalks is not the main issue. Schools have more important criteria: streets plowed and school parking lots cleared so buses can operate. They assume that once streets are all plowed and parking lots are cleared, there is a sufficient number of private households and businesses that will have cleared their sidewalks.

Who is responsible for clearing the miles of bike paths in the county that students use to walk to school?

Feel free to call 311 to get an answer to that question. But I suggest you get some fresh air first. You need to calm down.

Youre really embarrassing. The sidewalks i am referring to were along majjor routes like 355. People getting on and off the buses were standing in the street. People were walking in street lanes back from grocery stores. Im not talking about your little cul de sac neighborhood.
