no freaking way do elementary parents want their kids starting at almost 10am. that is so late. little kids learn better early. they will be in school until almost 5

This has been pointed out multiple times to Gatehouse. And yet they keep coming back to ask about this option. They clearly are leaning towards this option. I guess they don’t care about families or teachers at those schools.

Well they should care. I currently teach at a late ES and by 3:45, all I can do is a read aloud cause my kids are done. No kid will be effectively learning till 4:35. When kids are not making adequate progress because they aren’t available for learning, maybe they will care.

So now you’ll just do your read aloud and maybe a snack at 4:00 pm. Chill.

Based off my kids schedule this year, this would be his schedule with a 30 minute pushback.

10:00-11:00 -Specials
11:00-11:20-Morning Meeting
11:20-12:40- Math
12:40-1:10- Intervention
1:10-1:40- Content
1:40-2:10- Recess
2:10-2:40-Lunch
2:40-4:35- Lang Arts

I don’t think any parent would want this schedule for their kids.

Lunch would never be at 2:10 you idiot.

yes it would. my elementary starts at 9:15 now. first lunch is 10:30am. last lunch starts at 1:30. if you push start times back kids will be starting lunch at 2pm or later.

With a later start the first lunch can still be 1030. Why do you think it needs to shift?

If school stars at 9:50, that’s 40 minutes after the bell. How much time does the cafeteria need to transition between breakfast and lunch?

I admittedly hadn't thought of breakfast service. I suppose it's not an option to eliminate that? It wouldn't be needed with later starts, but Im guessing it's guaranteed as part of FARMS.

No, it’s bad enough they’re making kids who rely on school breakfast wait an extra 30 minutes to eat. On top of that, some elementary schools would still be starting at or before 9:00 when breakfast service is still appropriate. Equitable access.

I wish feeding county residents wasnt so entwined with the education system.

Sigh.

You know the bolded is it, right? Just like with everything about the pandemic (well, they do respond to actual laws from Richmond, but other than that...). Just like the school year calendar. Just like every. other. thing. they. do.

They don't listen to teachers. They don't listen to parents. They don't listen to community members. They may or may not listen to principals because principals don't usually share for me to know. They just...do what they want and the school board rubber stamps it. And the voters rubber stamp FCDC's slate for school board. And we keep going on this way.

they need to stay as is.

Honest question: why is the survey so annoying? Why separate by start time/end time for each option (with a question in between), as if we can have one without the other? (As in, "I'm cool with ths start time but hate the end time.") Do they not have actual experts to design these?!

Absolutely not. Having taken many FCPS surveys, there is no way they have an expert design them or analyze them. They are truly garbage.

Agree it's terrible. Can barely follow the thread of what they want me to rate, let alone why.

Plus it seems anyone can fill it out as many times as they want. What a joke. It's an in outrage, really.

And there is no option for "leave it as is".

It's just one of two choices that you probably don't want.

You can say neither option.

Just move middle school start time to 8am

It would be really cool if responses were released publicly. Will it be FOIA-ble?

Did you just get here? You can't move one without a ripple effect on them all.

9:20 is already late enough to manage, 9:50 is just nuts.

exactly. Super early start time is definitely a negative factor in academic performance. Not every family can wind down and go to bed at 9pm especially if there are teenagers and kids have sports.

I doubt anyone would pick this option, although I would personally love it. I am not a morning person and neither are my kids and my MS kid is suffering. Anything between 8-9am would be an improvement without crazy late school day when kids get off the bus in the darkness.
