New school start times survey

Anonymous
Hesitating to start a new thread on this, because we've had some others. BUT. This potentially impacts all school start times and FCPS hasn't done a great job of explaining they have a new survey out with start time options. (This has been discussed in the boundary review thread, but I worry folks who aren't likely impacted by that will miss this.).

Option 1:

Elementary:
7:45 am - 2:30 pm and 8:10 a.m. - 2:55 p.m.

Middle:
9:35 am - 4:20 p.m.

Secondary/HS
9 am - 3:45 p.m.

Option 2:

Elementary:
9 am - 3:45 pm and 9:50 am - 4:35 pm

Middle:
8 am - 2:45 pm

Secondary/HS
8:40 am - 3:25 pm (SS) and 8:30 am - 3:15 pm (HS)

You can also choose an option that you don't like either of them.

I just took the survey (current staff member). As usual, I didn't see a box for comments. I feel like every time they put out a survey, their minds are pretty much made up before the data even comes in.

Who got this survey this time? Last year first was MS kids and parents and then they expanded. Who is getting this one?

I heard about it from someone who went to one of the latest rounds of boundary meetings. Dunne also sent it out in his newsletter this a.m.

Digging through my inbox, I'm only finding it in Robyn Lady’s latest newsletter. Otherwise, it’s been linked at the boundary review meeting.

Thank you for posting the link. I have 2 ES kids and both options are very concerning.

Thank you for posting as had not seen this anywhere else and not following latest boundary thread as needed a breather from it

Where is this link from? Haven’t seen this one even though I’m subscribed to a lot of the news you choose mail lists.

What are you concerned about?

Option 2 is the obvious choice. Survey results have to be tilted like 90-10.

By the time any changes go into effect, I will only have kids in HS, but I am looking at this from the perspective of ALL ages. To me, Option 1 is ridiculous. As a parent on her 4th consecutive year of having a FCPS, middle schooler, I certainly do my share of complaining about the early start times, but that doesn't mean I want their schedule to shift two hours later! That is crazy. I like Option 2 for MS and HS. We fell within that range (in option 2) for ES and I thought it was late. I can't imagine the later side of that range. Especially with younger ES kids. So I can see how that sucks for parents of ES kids, and ES is 7 years. And for me, that is what it comes down to--yes, MS start times SUCK, but it is two years. Apparently, we cannot change it without making it suck for seven years.

I don't know why they are trying to do this from scratch - aren't there many, many other school districts around the country? Hasn't anyone done a study about which times work best?

You clearly don't have a kid in one of the ES's whose start time would shift to 9:50 a.m. Both of these options are terrible. They shouldn't make a change.

Comparing the 7 years of ES to the 2 years of MS is apples to oranges. Younger and older kids have very different sleep schedules and needs.
