Who is gloating?. Why are you just sitting there like a bump on a log sad about what happened. Step up a little.

I work as a researcher in geographical sciences, focusing on remote sensing. My projects include climate change. I also volunteer and donate to environmental organizations. Care to tell me how you are more “stepped up” than I am now?

I'm not smacking you around for having an opinion about what could be done to prevent disasters like this in the future.

You think ranting on an anonymous message board is "stepping up"?

No, I think taking action to strengthen our data collection our science research, our weather forecasting abilities, our warning systems is stepping up. Prioritizing making investments in knowledge that will help keep our families safe from a catastrophic weather events is stepping up.

What is the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning?. Who is in charge of tracking all of this information and using it to keep everybody safe?.

There are many people out there who avoid getting drowned in a flood or getting hit by lightning or getting into a car accident because of black ice and any number of other dangerous weather phenomenon.

How are they doing it?. Let's invest in making sure everyone can do it.

I guess we could explain that flooding can kill you. Listen, the information was made available. There was a history of flooding. The people running the camp decided to ignore these warnings. If you think having the government running all camps is a solution, I can assure you that the same mistakes would be made.

Read what they are saying.

Yeah. I think that there are trolls impersonating "Democrats" to post horrible things.

We can talk about politics and lament the loss of innocent children in one breath, without being too reactionary. No, these kids wouldn't be alive if Kamala were President.

How can you possibly assert such a thing?

Explain yourself.

Neither is ok. But, this was a private camp that had a history of flooding for many years. Both should have better precautions in place.

This has nothing to do with politics. This happened because the camp failed to protect these kids.

What does any of that have to do with the horrible comments people have made in this thread?

You're not going to survive well in an anonymous chat form if you don't learn how to identify and ignore trolls.

You are not helpless in the face of this disaster. You can take a look at it and try to understand why it happened. Precisely out of respect for the people that lost their lives

You may disagree that it is worth investing in, and having respect for a robust national weather service and all the infrastructure that it takes to have that. But there is nothing disrespectful in posters expressing that view.

I don't disagree with funding the NWS and having whatever infrastructure is necessary. That has nothing to do with showing basic human decency when referring to these children, who presumably died horrible deaths. Those two things are compatible. You don't have to be an a-hole to support the NWS.

Why does any functioning adult need the NWS to tell them that a creek prone to flash flooding will flash flood after 10” of sudden rain?

I mean, at some point, people have to use their own brains and not be reliant on some authority to spoon feed them every single action they should take.

The counselors and management of this camp are to blame. Period. Because they knew the history of flooding at the camp. They knew it had been raining for hours. But they didn’t even monitor the creek. They couldn’t be bothered to.

But some of you here are vitally dependent on making this the fault of DOGE and Trump. So you excuse people who allowed children to be killed because they were too lazy/stupid to think that flooding might occur after record amounts of rain.

You are making this about Trump and doge. They are a problem as they got rid of fema and help so long term will be an issue. Trump is golfing and doesn’t care. He should have sent help.

DCUM won’t let me post the YouTube link. But if you go to YouTube and search for a video titled “Be Flood Aware 2017” you will see that this was a known serious problem and that part of Texas has the highest flash flood risk in the entire US.

And I’m not “smacking anyone around” for doing that; I am talking about the ghouls who are literally saying they don’t care because it’s Texas, they voted for it, blah blah blah. This thread has at least three gross posts on every page, and if you’re going to deny that, there’s no point in talking with you, because you don’t face reality. If my chastising post doesn’t apply to you, then ease on down the road.

Hey - so there are just as many if not more people missing/recovered/perished from the flooding who are not at Mystic. Others were swept away from parks and other homes on the river. They do not have a firm grasp on numbers yet because they don't know who was there to begin with. This all happened incredibly fast. This is how flash floods happen in the hill country. It was not a gradual rise in the water.

I cannot speak for the family who owns and runs Mystic, but I assume that nothing you guys say here - or what others are saying all over the country in terms of blame and second guessing and such - touches the sorrow and grief they are feeling right now. Additionally, I believe they lost one of their own because he was trying to save the young campers. I say I believe because it has been rumored up to now but from what I understand now, it is true. This family is beloved by generations of campers and their families in Texas.

Another beloved owner and director of another camp perished trying to save things at her facility. Because it happened so fast.

A boys camp just down the river from Mystic has basically been destroyed with even more physical damage to the buildings than Mystic's. The stories of the heroics of the 20-21 year old counselors who saved some of these boys are coming out now.

I think the sorrow and horror of parents and families who lost young children tops the sorrow of the camp owners whose negligence killed those little kids. I hope they never recover from their guilt. They have blood on their hands. I’m sure they will rationalize that God wanted this. Well God created brains which they didn’t use.

They had the youngest bunks on the lowest ground. It was a well loved camp but they still failed if they knew that they were in a flood area and had no precautions. As you said other camps got out. The design of the camp played a huge part.

There are aerial photos of the camp here: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/07/05/us/texas-floods

It puts in perspective just how massive the flood was. As someone who has (thankfully) never seen a huge flash flood in person, it's hard to wrap my mind around how the water made it all the way up to the cabins.

Given its republican country Trump should have gone in with help. Instead he’s golfing vs finding those kids.
