Flash Flood in Texas,

Anonymous
It sounds like it swept through a summer camp and multiple kids are still missing. So sad and scary!

If you do a search on this site for Camp Mystic, you’ll see that it’s been mentioned here several times. I was a camper there so I’ve noted when others have mentioned it. The camp was planning on celebrating its 100th anniversary next year and is where some of the most prominent Texan families have sent their girls for generations.

It’s particularly tragic that the cabins in the impacted area were lined up by age, starting with the cabins for the youngest campers at the very end (bottom). I don’t know if it would have made a difference, but it seems that the youngest campers would be the most vulnerable and least able to escape in this situation. I suspect the older girls were placed in the cabins up on the hill to spare the younger ones from what could be a tiring uphill hike at the end of a hot, active day.

The Mystic owners are incredible caring people and I am sure they are devastated over this tragedy. One of the owners, Dick Eastland, was middle aged when I was a camper and must be in his 70s now, went down in the flood to try to rescue the girls. He was found safe swept down 5 miles with 5 girls he was able to help. Another owner is missing.

My heart goes out to all the families of the missing. It’s horrific.

The town’s mayor said they didn’t have any system to monitor flash floods. And now 24 people are confirmed dead and more are missing.

Too bad DOGE gutted NOAA and FEMA. People don’t want big government until they realize it has a useful function in keeping us safe.

The new U.S.budget is basically zeroing out all climate research. Republicans can pretend climate change doesn’t exist all they want but it’s real, it’s here, and this kind of “unprecedented weather event” is going to happen with increasing frequency. Pretty soon these weather disaster news stories will just be so frequent that they will be like another school shooting, where it will be out of the news cycle within 24-48 hours it will just be normalized awful.

you mean climate research would've led meteorologists on Thursday afternoon to predict a 30 foot crest that was higher than the 1987 crest and hasn't been that high since 1930?

I have family members at Mystic. They are safe now tonight (picked up by their parents after helicoptering out) but very traumatized. I went to camp in the area as well, I know many families with kids in the camps there, and I know numerous locals who run the camps. It is a very tight-knit community that will never be the same.

Save your politics for another forum please.

Reading about this breaks my heart. My daughter is the same age as the girls who are missing and is at camp right now in Virginia and I can’t imagine this happening. Tondrop your kid at summer camp and never see her again. My heart goes out to all of these families

A forecast of tremendous amounts of rain causing flooding seems incredibly easy to predict and foresee.

Not to minimize this tragedy, but as far as frequent weather disasters, it feels like we're already there.
