Who is gloating?. Why are you just sitting there like a bump on a log sad about what happened. Step up a little.

You think ranting on an anonymous message board is "stepping up"?

No, I think taking action to strengthen our data collection our science research, our weather forecasting abilities, our warning systems is stepping up. Prioritizing making investments in knowledge that will help keep our families safe from a catastrophic weather events is stepping up.

What is the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning?. Who is in charge of tracking all of this information and using it to keep everybody safe?.

There are many people out there who avoid getting drowned in a flood or getting hit by lightning or getting into a car accident because of black ice and any number of other dangerous weather phenomenon.

How are they doing it?. Let's invest in making sure everyone can do it.

What does any of that have to do with the horrible comments people have made in this thread?

DP. What are the horrible comments?

There have been multiple comments where posters say they don't feel bad for the dead girls because their parents are probably Trump supporters. There was also a comment early on referring sarcastically to the girls as "your precious little blond Christian girls" and at least one poster defending it.

Please point out where somebody said they did not feel bad about the girls.

Not because I could predict flash flooding, but they just seem too little to go away. I know “it’s normal” in some families to send kids away that small, but that’s too little.

Yea, blame the parents (eyeroll).

My 9 year old is at sleepaway camp as we speak. Go away.

Seriously go away. Just bc your family doesn’t send kids to camp at what we age doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Imagine if I was over here bad mouthing you for helicopter parenting and not giving your kids a chance to learn independence. Two of my kids started sleep away camp at age 6 and still talk about it as some of their fondest memories.

Kerr County has known about its flood risk for decades, including a major flood at Camp Mystic in 1932. Neighboring communities along the Guadalupe River, such as Comfort where 10 people died in a 1987 church camp flood, have also faced deadly flash floods. In 2015, Kerr County officials discussed installing a modern flood warning system with the Upper Guadalupe River Authority, and a 2016 study confirmed the county’s existing equipmen
t was antiquated and unreliable.

Despite this, commissioners, including some who called sirens “extravagant,” voted against upgrades. A FEMA grant application in 2017 was denied, and no alternative funding was pursued. Meanwhile, Comal County invested in sensors and sirens that provided early warnings during the 2025 flood. Kerr County did not and when the Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in 45 minutes, there were no alerts, only devastation.

From the San Antonio Express-News (2016):
“Kerr County’s existing flood warning system is antiquated and unreliable, requiring urgent upgrades to protect residents from rapidly rising waters.”

On commissioner opposition:
“I think this whole thing is a little extravagant for Kerr County, with sirens and such,” said Commissioner Tom Baldwin. “Taking these funds out of special projects from the road and bridge department ticks me off a little bit.”

People seem to be missing the point.

Current administration is actively moving the US back in time. You will have to evaluate every single situation (food, potential campsite, drugs, weather for sailing etc...) for potential harm to yourselves and your family, just like they did in the "good old days."

Due your due diligence, those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.

The "they" is referring to the poster who made a mocking post, not the girls/people in Texas.

Take a look at this Twitter thread to appreciate the magnitude and velocity of the flood:

Ah, but no one sat down the citizens and made the watch the video and then sign a document certifying that they understood the risk. And had yearly refresher courses.

Thank you. What a damning description of their inaction. One wonders how many adults were swayed by "climate change does not exist". Perhaps more counties would have taken the risk seriously if everyone in that part of the world understood that climate change brings about more frequent extreme flooding and storm events.

It's a tiny fraction of posters compared to all of us normal people who are thinking about these poor kids. And I'm prepared to bet that those are trolls trying to rile you up.

I don’t live in that area but I have a feeling it was regularly discussed by local news and weather reporters. At some point you assume responsibility for your own life (or that of your children.)

I work as a researcher in geographical sciences, focusing on remote sensing. My projects include climate change. I also volunteer and donate to environmental organizations. Care to tell me how you are more “stepped up” than I am now?

I'm not smacking you around for having an opinion about what could be done to prevent disasters like this in the future.

And I’m not “smacking anyone around” for doing that; I am talking about the ghouls who are literally saying they don’t care because it’s Texas, they voted for it, blah blah blah. This thread has at least three gross posts on every page, and if you’re going to deny that, there’s no point in talking with you, because you don’t face reality. If my chastising post doesn’t apply to you, then ease on down the road.

That’s the reality. This happened in Texas, a notorious red state. This happened to children at a Christian camp. Children whose parents almost certainly all voted for Trump. Those are three strikes against them for a lot of people here.

It’s not exactly hard to fathom why people here say they don’t care. They’re just being honest. They shouldn’t be excoriated for being honest.

"On Saturday afternoon, Gov. Greg Abbott said one word has been used more than any during this natural disaster: Prayer. "All we know is that prayer does work," he said."

I feel awful for the children. Just horrific what they experienced. It's heartbreaking and needless. But any adult who voted for this buffoon (or any other modern day Republican) reaps what they sow. It's tragic that people are so stupid and blind.
