A Cold Emergency Alert has been issued from 12 am Mon, 1/6 to 9 am Wed, 1/8. With wind chill values to be below 20 degrees and frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes and/or hypothermia.

It's not going to be -20F. I don't know where you got that idea. It will be upper teens.

Typo but the bet remains

This is it.

Why do you think that would matter? Upper teens isn't a serious frostbite risk.

The warning says frostbite within 30 minutes until 9. Kids have to wait for the buses in the morning and walk.

It doesn’t matter what I think. Wait and see.

Weather forecasting has greatly improved in the last 25 years. And even if it didn't start tonight, we couldn't be sure it wouldn't start during the school day tomorrow. They had to close. But they shouldn't celebate.

Tell your kids to put their hands in their pockets if they don't have gloves. Upper teens was still outdoor recess temperature when I grew up.

People in this area seem to lack common sense.

Ok. County isn’t going to change its calls because you don’t like them. Better approach is for you to start getting used to snow days because that’s the reality.

The video appears to be mostly stock art and prerecorded segments. You can stitch it all together in imovie or wevideo (free to schools) or equivalent in thirty minutes or less. I know this because we do a 4k morning show every Friday in elementary school every week and it's not rocket science. Most older schools used to have a broadcast studio but the county moved away from them some years ago. Some still do them and in some cases students do the post-production process or use wevideo to make book trailers.

Why not celebrate? The kids are all celebrating. That’s what it is about. Embrace your inner child.

Apparently the county and school needs to run a public awareness campaign. Do we need to tell people not to lick metal posts in the winter, too?

People who are upset about the schools being closed may not recall what has happened in the past. In the past, the county had problems plowing side/neighborhood streets. I recall one year it was days before side streets were plowed.

You cannot blame MCPS that the buses cant pick up students and cannot reach the schools when the streets are not plowed.

You cannot compare Montgomery County’s snow preparedness to a county in Massachusetts. We dont get enough snow on a regular basis to warrant spending the money. The downside, however, is that every 3-5 years school is closed for more than one day.

Think of the parents scrambling because they still have to work but now don't have child care. Or the kids with special needs that are going to miss out services, likely for several days.

Yes, this closure is necessary. And yes, NT kids will celebrate. But adults shouldn't. Thousands are being impacted negatively by this.

MCPS is closed for multiple day stretches almost every year! Remember almost exactly one year ago? Almost the same situation. Snow on Monday. Streets were cleared on Tuesday, but MCPS didn't bother shoveling their sidewalks until Thursday morning.

Yeah that was pretty bad. They hadn't done anything. I remember we were picking up my kid from the childcare provider at the school on Tuesday afternoon and the school sidewalks we're covered in ice. Not a soul in sight working to clear them.

NWS has increased predictions to 8-12" and thinks it's going to be mostly snow, with possibly some freezing rain at the tail end. Just lovely, to really cement the snow in place and make it tough and heavy to clear. And then it's below freezing all week. This sounds really annoying.
