A Cold Emergency Alert has been issued from 12 am Mon, 1/6 to 9 am Wed, 1/8. With wind chill values to be below 20 degrees and frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes and/or hypothermia.

It's not going to be -20F. I don't know where you got that idea. It will be upper teens.

Not the pp, but I think they meant less than 20 degrees, not -20 degrees.

Closed tomorrow, on the website.

Didn’t MCPS close for like 2.5 days for 3 inches last year?!?

And they closed for over a week with 12 inches.

Plan on being off for 3 days and probably delays for re-freezing and cold on Wed/Thurs

Thankful they made the call now. But I will laugh so hard if we end up in the inevitable snow hole

Are you sure? Why would they close for temperatures just under 20 degrees?

I think they misheard the news reports thought "under 20F" meant "20F below [zero]."

You people are ridiculous. Schools in the northeast don't have armies of facilities workers, either. They get it done because they're expected to get it done, and everyone accepts that the objective is "good enough" not "perfectly cleared of any evidence of snow".

They have much less litigious parents.

If you want to normalize going to school with “good enough” snow clearance, you have to first normalize not threatening to sue MCPS over everything.

It’s not an issue of litigious parents. The issue is that in areas where they have feet of snow over many storms over a third or more of the year, it makes sense to invest in snow removal. For us, where we experience inconvenience a couple of times a year, it is appropriate to target resources to real issues, needs and problems.

There's even a video from MCPS about the snow day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouFWoOTwBag

Anyone get text alerts yet? I know it’s in the web and there is a cheesy video but I wanna make sure their emergency alert systems are functioning.
