This is very much baked into the culture of the school and when there were fewer white families staying in DCPS through 12th it was less of an issue. But now more white families want to stay and there are not enough spots and academically challenging high schools so you see the percentage of white students at Banneker creeping up. If that number increased enough to change the culture if the school, I think you would see some unhappiness among black families.
This is very true. It's also true that the surrounding neighborhood is a LOT more white these days, those families have opted into the DCPS elementaries, and the interest in Banneker from that group is enormous. They see the Banneker kids walking around the neighborhood and at Seaton (where they go to fulfill their community service hours) and there is a huge amount of interest in the school. So we'll see what happens over the years. I don't know what the ideal non-Black percentage is so that it can still be a place a Black excellence.
Why is it that black people just can’t have something nice without others trying to intrude? They tried to disrespect Howard University by treating it as a dog park and now they’re trying to take Banneker High School. The black students at Banneker are doing fine and don’t need to be saved from those with a “colonizer mindset”. It doesn’t cost anything to just leave these students and their families alone. They don’t need affluent others on the PTO trying to change the culture of the school. LEAVE THEM ALONE.
troll
Anytime anyone says anything supporting black people, it’s always considered a troll to some of this board. I’m just speaking the truth from a perspective of a black person living in DC since I was born in the 1990s. Has it ever occurred that high achieving black families want to send their black children to a predominately black school with other high achieving black children?
So your pro-segregation?
And you think it's ok for high-achieving black families to horde resources?
If you are not a troll, you might as well be.
It’s only a problem when black families do it huh? Where’s your disdain for the affluent white families in Ward 3 who continue to hoard resources at schools like Janney, Key, Lafayette, Deal, Mann etc? I get the feeling that you think anytime the playing field is being leveled it’s unfair to white people. You somehow believe that black children excelling in a nurturing environment like Banneker is a threat to white children. Why is that? I would truly like to know.
What resources are white families hoarding at these schools?
Tons of money. It’s shameful that a school can fundraise $500,000 but then turn around and get upset about their school budget.
They get less funding per pupil, right? When their budgets get cut and they lose teachers, they can’t use fundraised dollars to pay salaries, right?
No, they don’t. The only funding streams that schools like Janney aren’t receiving are Title I and at risk funds. That’s why their funding is so low. A school like Janney or Key shouldn’t receive comparable funds as a school like Burrville, Malcolm X, or Whitlock. In fact, schools like Janney and Key should only be receiving the baseline funding amounts to keep the school operating but nothing extra. These schools do not need extra funds for social workers, aftercare, guidance counselors etc.
These schools don't get money for aftercare.
What ES has guidance counselors?
What is funded at these schools is pretty bare bones!
And they shouldn’t ever receive money for aftercare. They should have cut more funds from the rich schools to fund more programming at Title I schools. Funding at every single non-Title I school except Bancroft, Capitol Hill Montessori, Hyde-Addison, Stevens ELC, Military Road ELC, and Shepherd should have been significantly reduced. The children of the elites at Brent, Janney, Key, Lafayette, Mann, Maury, Murch, Peabody, Ross, and Stoddert will be just fine without a lot of extra staff and programs. If we’re going to talk about the funding that’s needed, these schools would be just fine with just having classroom teachers, a PE teacher, Art teacher, principal, 1 administrative assistant, and 1 custodian on their budget. All other positions aren’t needed at these schools. The parents at these schools can surely supplement for extracurricular activities and specials like drama, foreign language, sculpture and writing.
