Dp. How in the world did you make that inference from PP's comment?! Weird. |
Well whatever the amount is, I’m sure it’s close to that amount. The design of that new building signals to me and others that people with significant amounts of money and resources had influence over the project. |
My kids are at a school that raises maybe $150K (and that’s a very recent thing) and we spend a lot of it on making sure disadvantaged kids at our school get to partake in everything irrespective of income (free aftercare, clubs, field trips, tutoring, etc). |
Have you even been to Ballou to interact with any of the students or ask the teachers what they think? You just assume that because it’s a black school that the students are illiterate and unintelligent. Lay off the right wing talking points. Being white isn’t the holy grail of academic proficiency, you know? |
that’s a really dumb take. it’s literally less thab 1/2 that amount. Nd the parents wish they had more say in the modernization plans! not to mention the fact that the school was expanded and many of the new seats went to OOB students. |
It might seem like a dumb take to you, but I can assure you that many people share this sentiment. Just ask any black folks what they think about the building and they will all say the same thing. They will all say that DCPS shoved out tons of money so white folks in the neighborhood could have a state of the art building. DCPS didn’t renovate this building to serve black children. They renovated it so that more white children would enroll. That’s the truth. |
Maury’s demographics don’t suggest an expansion of OOB seats to me. It still looks like a place overrun by affluent families who are hellbent on keeping black children out. That’s what it looks like to me from my vantage point. |
100+ You hit the nail on the head with your statement. I like how you called out the facts that are as plain as day for anyone to see. |
oh ffs. DCPS renovates schools on a cycle. many W7 and 8 schools got renovated. This kind of comment is just dumb as rocks and makes it sound like you’re trying to aggravate racial issues. |
While that might be true regarding the renovation cycle, the materials and designs of the renovated schools in wards 7 and 8 are significantly lesser quality than what you find at renovated schools in ward 3. Compare the Murch renovation with the renovation of Kimball and CW Harris and then get back to me. |
your vantage point is worthless - worse than worthless, it’s actively toxic and counterproductive. not to mention wrong. the school grew by I think around 150 students after the reno and many of these were OOB kids offered spots in upper grades. and the % of white kids is pretty much exactly the same as it was prior to the modernization (a bit under 60%). do you actually think the toxic waste you’re spewing does anything for equity? who would want you anywhere near their school, no matter what race you are? |
They use higher quality building materials at the renovated schools that serve the affluent children. They cut all kinds of corners to save a dollar when they renovate schools that our black children attend. Why is that? I think we all know the answer to that. |
Yeah you’re going to have to back this up with some actual budget numbers buddy. I just googled Kimball and it looks basically the same as Maury. (For that matter I didn’t love the Maury reno so it’s dumb to conclude that a different design is somehow racist.) https://eastoftheriverdcnews.com/2019/07/10/kimball-elementary-school-renovation-nears-completion/ |
Now imagine that a white person posted this about Black kids attending SWW. |
This is where you are wrong. What is toxic about pointing out how a building renovation was done to satisfy white families in the neighborhood. It’s a fact and it’s true. And how is it toxic to point out that the school has an inviting atmosphere for black children? People who usually react this way to posts pointing out injustice and inequity are the ones guilty of trying to keep black children out of schools. You probably believe that all black children deserve to be sent to rundown schools. You aren’t fooling me. Have a good day. |
