Sounds like you’re trying to imply that only black children are OOB and live in apartments in Ward 3.

Dp. How in the world did you make that inference from PP's comment?! Weird.

This is very true. It's also true that the surrounding neighborhood is a LOT more white these days, those families have opted into the DCPS elementaries, and the interest in Banneker from that group is enormous. They see the Banneker kids walking around the neighborhood and at Seaton (where they go to fulfill their community service hours) and there is a huge amount of interest in the school. So we'll see what happens over the years. I don't know what the ideal non-Black percentage is so that it can still be a place a Black excellence.

Why is it that black people just can’t have something nice without others trying to intrude? They tried to disrespect Howard University by treating it as a dog park and now they’re trying to take Banneker High School. The black students at Banneker are doing fine and don’t need to be saved from those with a “colonizer mindset”. It doesn’t cost anything to just leave these students and their families alone. They don’t need affluent others on the PTO trying to change the culture of the school. LEAVE THEM ALONE.

troll

Anytime anyone says anything supporting black people, it’s always considered a troll to some of this board. I’m just speaking the truth from a perspective of a black person living in DC since I was born in the 1990s. Has it ever occurred that high achieving black families want to send their black children to a predominately black school with other high achieving black children?

So your pro-segregation?

And you think it's ok for high-achieving black families to horde resources?

If you are not a troll, you might as well be.

It’s only a problem when black families do it huh? Where’s your disdain for the affluent white families in Ward 3 who continue to hoard resources at schools like Janney, Key, Lafayette, Deal, Mann etc? I get the feeling that you think anytime the playing field is being leveled it’s unfair to white people. You somehow believe that black children excelling in a nurturing environment like Banneker is a threat to white children. Why is that? I would truly like to know.

What resources are white families hoarding at these schools?

Tons of money. It’s shameful that a school can fundraise $500,000 but then turn around and get upset about their school budget.

what school raises that much??

Janney, Key, Lafayette, Mann, Maury, Murch

Maury does not raise $500K. That’s completely untrue.

Well whatever the amount is, I’m sure it’s close to that amount. The design of that new building signals to me and others that people with significant amounts of money and resources had influence over the project.

They get less funding per pupil, right? When their budgets get cut and they lose teachers, they can’t use fundraised dollars to pay salaries, right?

I think PTO could in theory pay salaries. But of course they shouldn’t have to. DCPS needs to adequately fund great schools for all kids. Even if a school only has rich kids — though as someone pointed out, DCPS is making every effort through set-asides and similar measures to increase enrollment of poor kids in “rich kid” schools. Those kids need the same resources they would get at a “poor kid” school, and obviously DCPS must pay.

My kids are at a school that raises maybe $150K (and that’s a very recent thing) and we spend a lot of it on making sure disadvantaged kids at our school get to partake in everything irrespective of income (free aftercare, clubs, field trips, tutoring, etc).

Have you even been to Ballou to interact with any of the students or ask the teachers what they think? You just assume that because it’s a black school that the students are illiterate and unintelligent. Lay off the right wing talking points. Being white isn’t the holy grail of academic proficiency, you know?

While that might be true regarding the renovation cycle, the materials and designs of the renovated schools in wards 7 and 8 are significantly lesser quality than what you find at renovated schools in ward 3. Compare the Murch renovation with the renovation of Kimball and CW Harris and then get back to me.

The design of that new building signals to me and others that people with significant amounts of money and resources had influence over the project.

that’s a really dumb take. it’s literally less thab 1/2 that amount. Nd the parents wish they had more say in the modernization plans! not to mention the fact that the school was expanded and many of the new seats went to OOB students.

Maury’s demographics don’t suggest an expansion of OOB seats to me. It still looks like a place overrun by affluent families who are hellbent on keeping black children out. That’s what it looks like to me from my vantage point.

your vantage point is worthless - worse than worthless, it’s actively toxic and counterproductive. not to mention wrong. the school grew by I think around 150 students after the reno and many of these were OOB kids offered spots in upper grades. and the % of white kids is pretty much exactly the same as it was prior to the modernization (a bit under 60%).

do you actually think the toxic waste you’re spewing does anything for equity? who would want you anywhere near their school, no matter what race you are?

It might seem like a dumb take to you, but I can assure you that many people share this sentiment. Just ask any black folks what they think about the building and they will all say the same thing. They will all say that DCPS shoved out tons of money so white folks in the neighborhood could have a state of the art building. DCPS didn’t renovate this building to serve black children. They renovated it so that more white children would enroll. That’s the truth.

oh ffs. DCPS renovates schools on a cycle. many W7 and 8 schools got renovated. This kind of comment is just dumb as rocks and makes it sound like you’re trying to aggravate racial issues.

While that might be true regarding the renovation cycle, the materials and designs of the renovated schools in wards 7 and 8 are significantly lesser quality than what you find at renovated schools in ward 3. Compare the Murch renovation with the renovation of Kimball and CW Harris and then get back to me.

They use higher quality building materials at the renovated schools that serve the affluent children. They cut all kinds of corners to save a dollar when they renovate schools that our black children attend. Why is that? I think we all know the answer to that.

Yeah you’re going to have to back this up with some actual budget numbers buddy. I just googled Kimball and it looks basically the same as Maury. (For that matter I didn’t love the Maury reno so it’s dumb to conclude that a different design is somehow racist.)

Now imagine that a white person posted this about Black kids attending SWW.

This is where you are wrong. What is toxic about pointing out how a building renovation was done to satisfy white families in the neighborhood. It’s a fact and it’s true. And how is it toxic to point out that the school has an inviting atmosphere for black children? People who usually react this way to posts pointing out injustice and inequity are the ones guilty of trying to keep black children out of schools. You probably believe that all black children deserve to be sent to rundown schools. You aren’t fooling me. Have a good day.
