The BBC miniseries

I preferred Gwyneth and the cast of that version.

Me too

I read the book immediately before watching them both. Colin Firth and the leading lady are a better Darcy and Elizabeth, and that version is incredibly faithful to the book. It reminds me of how Jeremy Iron’s Brideshead Revisited is the best book-to-screen translation ever ever ever (in fact, the series is way better than the book! Just gorgeous!)

But Keira Knightley’s version is more entertaining and faster to get through, obvi. I love them both!

They're trying to do very different things and I think they both achieve their separate goals.

The miniseries is a much more faithful adaptation of the book.

The movie is intended as a bit more of a modern update while still keeping the period setting. So they work particularly on trying to make you empathize more with Darcy particularly and to more explicitly explain things like Charlotte's choice understandable to a modern audience.

Very different goals, I think both succeed.

I dislike the 2005 movie (does not get the feeling of the book right at all) and adore the 1995 adaptation. 45 if that matters.

This is the only answer. Ever.

I hated that movie precisely because it did such a good job at revealing how awful Emma's behavior was. Gosh I hated her and I couldn't get behind the redemption.

I hated her as Emma.

The best Emma is in the 2009 BBC miniseries version.

Nope. The best version is Clueless.

Although Firth is my crush, in no way does the bbc adaption capture the unrequited love and connection as between knightley and Macfadyen. His Mr Darcy is a romance novel come to life and his longing for Miss Elizabeth made time stand still, especially when he professes his love. I did not see the same chemistry with Firth/Ehle’s performances.

Well said. It was also beautifully crafted.

+1000

He was so awkward but their chemistry was amazing. When he leans in when she’s rejecting him in the rain it’s palpable! Plus it’s a more fun watch and the Jane in this one is so beautiful while the one in Colin Firth is just not. And Elizabeth is too old in thr mini series. I’ve read thr book a bunch of times, I appreciate the 2005 modern interpretation.

Oooh. True.

It is a toss up between Clueless and the 2009 BBC miniseries.

The newest movie and the Gwyneth one were far below those two.

I love Jonny Lee Miller as 2009 miniseries Mr Knightley.

She's pretty for 1813!

It’s distracting having Jane not be beautiful since everyone is always commenting on her beauty.

The actor playing Jane would indeed have been considered beautiful at that time. Here is a picture of her contemporary, Louise of Prussia, who was said to be the most beautiful woman in Europe.
