People you know that died in a freak accident. What happened?

The contents of the truck (tons of asphalt) filled their vehicle, killing them. It was a wrongful death lawsuit and the truck company claimed it was the girl's fault for driving too close to the truck. The girls' families won, of course.

That reminds me of the Ellicott City train derailment…the train cars overturned and dumped their loads of coal onto 2 teens who were hanging out on the railroad bridge, and suffocated them

Rip current, took a star football player on afternoon and he drowned. The whole school was a wreck.

I know 2 people who drowned because of the rip current at Ocean City. One is currently in a vegetative state and one is back to normal but spent 2 weeks in the hospital. They were two separate incidents.

If they are still alive, they didn’t drown. I’m confused by this post.

You can drown and be resuscitated. It happened to me. I drowned (I was dead) and I was resuscitated (brought back to life).

But it's not relevant to the thread topic. If they lived, they didn't "die in a freak accident" they survived a freak accident.

OP, you suck. I loathe this thread. I know, it’s on me to ignore it.

Dh already makes fun of me because I have a phobia of driving behind a truck or car with a load that could detach. This thread has merely confirmed my instincts.
When my kids were young I was terrified of hot cat death. I insisted that daycare always always call if kid is late or doesn’t show up. I guess now cars have alarms and such.

This is a horrible and serious topic, but I couldn’t help but lol at this typo…

I know someone whose toddler was killed by a lawnmower. Tragic and freak accident. I can't even imagine knowing that's how someone I loved died.

Yep same here. Anytime I'm behind a car carrying something like that I move out of the way. Heard too many horror stories of people either getting impaled or dying.

I won't drive behind a truck with an uncovered, unsecured or unstable load. I've seen accidents caused by something flying off a truck. You can see all the items on the side of the road. I did a ride along in an ambulance as a premed and observed the paramedics treat a man who had been flung out of the back of a pickup trying to hold down a mattress.

This is one of my biggest fears!

It happened to a mom in NW DC a few years ago. She was driving her kids.

Also happened to a little boy (just out walking, not driving) a couple of years ago in NW DC. I love walking in Rock Creek Park but I think about that little boy and his family all the time. Trees are amazing... and terrifying.

Was this on the Long Island Expressway? I remember that accident. It was someone slightly famous, but I can't remember.

It was the director Alan Pakula who died that way on the LEI - a pipe came off a vehicle, bounced off the roadway and in through his front windshield impaling him.

Wasnt this scene in The Omen?

Also some freak accident in the UK where something from the road was dislodged and killed a famous DJ.

We may know each other. Was she on her own at the time and bear suit may have been cause?

A friend's neighbor (a child) was killed by a freak accident with her yoga hammock. As a result I will never entertain the idea of putting something that could somehow hang someone in any way in my home.
