She can go to Charles and get anything she wants in exchange for putting on a happy face. Everyone knows that her going public and divorcing (especially a messy public divorce with a fight over assets and maintenance) is the end of the monarchy.

Yup! People want to believe that William and Kate have the fairy tale life but Kate absolutely worked hard to snag her Prince and will do what she needs to become Queen. I totally respect her for that! But it’s a job more than a romance.

+1, this was a quid pro quo arrangement from the start -- Kate set her sights on William and saw an opportunity because so many of the women in his set were disinterested in the job. She pursued him and molded herself into what she believed William, and the BRF, wanted in a future queen. And she was savvy and good at it (and also well funded by her family) and succeeded.

But it wasn't a love match. Kate didn't just accidentally fall in love with William at college. She was there to snag him. Also, he's pompous and dull and was only moderately handsome in his youth (and now not at all)-- were he not the heir to the throne, he would not have been of interest to her. She was social climbing and her family wanted to marry into the aristocracy. She aimed high and won, knowing the cost.

Kate is very controlled and usually excellent at not letting it show, but I was surprised by how angry and unhappy she looked at the coronation -- such a high profile event, they arrived late, looked unhappy in the carriage, and she seemed irate pretty much the entire time. She has looked happier at other more recent events but, notably, not while standing next to William.

I honestly think she cares more about how the rumors make her look than about the infidelity itself. Her image is here greatest asset and, along with the kids, her biggest leverage within the family.

+1. For someone who cares about image as much as Kate, that coronation was a flat failure. I don’t know what went on, but it didn’t look like she was enjoying herself in the least.

I’m the PP who said Rose is quite attractive.

I have to say that Rose looks particularly odd in the coronation pictures. It makes me think she was particularly uncomfortable…for some reason.

It’s weird because while the coronation is a solemn event, it’s also a positive/happy one. It’s the end of mourning the previous monarch and a new beginning for the family. I get the British sensibilities and all, but there seemed to be more going on. Maybe Kate was just struggling with the realization that the next one is hers, and it won’t be in 70 years. She seemed serious— which is appropriate— but more upset than I’d expect.

I think the difference with Harry though is that he doesn’t have the resources that Charles and Will as the King and heir have. Like William has tons of money he controls himself through the various duchies. If Kate were to get fed up she doesn’t have any real options. Her parents are broke, she’s not aristocratic so her place in those circles might be dicey, and I feel like the BRF is kinda stingy with the divorce settlements. In contrast, it’s unclear to me that Harry can make money without Meghan and he never had that much to begin with. She seems to be the brains of the operation. So if he cheats and she jumps ship that might be a bad situation for him. But none of these men have great role models.

Diana got a $26 million divorce settlement all those years ago and she still got to see her boys. Kate will be financially set in the event of any divorce.

Kate would do just fine in a divorce. Diana got this settlement after she spilled the dirt. Imagine how much Kate could negotiate if she agreed to sign a confidentiality agreement. The BRF likely wouldn’t survive yet another scandal and Charles is smart enough to know that.

Meh. But she wouldn’t have any status anymore. She’d just be a “middle class” girl with broke parents and no career. It’s humiliating. Plus how far would the money go when she has to pay for her own security and housing?

Diana got security and housing (an apartment in Kensington Palace) plus about $25M in 1995 dollars. I would expect Kate would get at least this, if not more.

I don’t see how being the mother of the future King would leave her in a status less, humiliating position.

It was reported that Kate inherited $110M worth of jewels from Queen Elisabeth. If this is true, she’s already set, but I agree, there won’t be a divorce. William knows he needs Kate will put duty before her own happiness, even if it means remaining in a miserable marriage.

I do to.

The “oldest child” are twin boys. Not one looks a bit like him.

She’ll live in style on royal property with all the security she wants, in the event of a divorce. She’s the mother of an heir to the throne.

+1. This is what Diana did—lived in a grand apartment in Kensington Palace.

Which she didn’t like. Living in KP is like living in a fishbowl. No privacy.

Which raised a question for me. One of the twins inherits the dad's titles, I get that. But couldn't Charles have worked both boys into the ceremony? It seemed a little mean.

Does Kate really own those fancy jewels? I thought the Queen lent out items from the royal collection. Camilla probably controls the vault now.

We don't know if its a happy marriage, a miserable one or just a difficult one due to having three kids, busy schedules, stress and lots of public scrutiny. These years of child rearing are tough for every couple.

At least they are lovers and friends since their teen years, know their duties well and apparently want to be where they are.

There is no shortage of women in LA who doesn't need money and would love to marry a prince.

But Diana lost her royal security protection at the finality of her divorce. She had to pay for her own security.

Rose is attractive for a Brit.

Not with the short leash he’s on.

Possibly. He has no family of real friends, just MM and her newly acquired celebrity groupies.

Diana had official security but she gave it up on her own accord because her billionaire BF's family had their own private security.

Police protection for Diana post-divorce only when attending public events.
