The Diplomat

I am tired about the overemphasis on women’s appearances, no matter how important her role is (in real life and in social media.) When I listen to Janet Yellen (or listened to Janet Reno), I was not thinking about whether they had good stylists!!

She and her husband have not had hot sex yet thus season, I suspect, because the guy was just discharged from the hospital after having been blown up. As far as whether the Foreign Secretary would be attracted to her…don’t underestimate the sex appeal of power.

Janet Yellen and Janet Reno always looked very neat, with done hair. On a fictional show, Kristin Scott Thomas on Slow Horses does low sex appeal + professional and poised very well.

+1. This isn’t about frizzy hair or plain pantsuits (though some posters said it). Kerry’s character doesn’t even seem to shower. By all accounts Yellen and Reno are okay in the hygiene department.

The good news is that a third season of the Diplomat is in the works. The bad news is that I watched all of Season 2 in just two nights. The ending was SO good, how will I possibly wait another year or whatever to see what happens next?! 😧

Wrong. She’s thin and always has been. So sick of the thin-shamers.

Have a cookie.

Here’s what they should have done:

1. Made Kate look at least as good as the moms at a DC private school or Big Law. Her suits and blouses are good, but she needs to wash her hair and wear makeup (think: a fresh Bobbi Brown face).

2. Play up the heat between Kate and her sexy husband. ICYMI: most women watching this show think that actor is hot. And plenty of us have angry sex with our partners…even when we can’t stand them…and it’s still hot.

3. Zero chance the hot black Brit would be attracted to greasy/frizzy no butt pantsuit lady. None. You can’t have that storyline unless you style Kate.

[b]4. The Asian lady needs more lines. And they need to make her even more of a smartass and more fun (with dry humor).

5. You know a show is way too complicated when you can’t remember any of the names of the characters. And I can’t follow what the PM has done—or allegedly done. It’s a mess.

6. They need more outdoors/background shots. American viewers want to see the foreign cities and cool scenery…especially when there aren’t any fashionable clothes on the screen.

I’m the one who said the Night Agent was better. They checked all the right boxes after starting with a simple premise with plot twists.

Such a missed opportunity.

I can tell a lot about you just by the bolded comment. Not every Asian woman has to be Akwafina.

Apparently her hair plays a critical plot point. It makes sense in the end.

Zip it! No there yet. This season is so good. No I didn't know what was going on at the beginning but not hard to figure it out quickly.

I do want to brush her hair!

I loved season one, but was really confused about who is who and what happened. There should have been a “last season on The Diplomat” recap to bring viewers up to speed.

There is. It’s under the episodes You can also read a recap online, there are many to choose from.

I’m done with the second season but since most of you aren’t I will only say that it was great. I think the whole cast is fantastic and adore Kerri Russel and Rufus Sewell. He is so hot and so funny and so smart. 10/10. Can we stop with the body shaming? Kerri is naturally thin, like Michelle Pfeiffer. People have different body types and none of them are bad. If she put on weight you’d be criticizing her for that. Just stop. Support women.

I just started season 2. I think the problem with Hal and her is that they both are and want to be powerful independent people so they are in each others way but love keeps them tethered

She’s supposed to be modeled on Samantha Power so I definitely see the aesthetic. The issue is not how she is styled (realistically) but the fact that everyone else is styled normally - that is to say, for TV.

Also the problem is that the “hot Black Brit” is styled for TV whereas Kate is deliberately not. In reality he wouldn’t look like that.

Disappointed that there are only six episodes this season!

I would say the conflict is desire for power [Hal] v responsibility to serve [Kate] and
Moral flexibility [Hal] v rigidity [Kate].

It’s not that Hal wants to do bad things, but he very much wants to be the one doing the good things, and he’s much more open to the ends justifying the means. Meanwhile, Kate may find the prospect of serving as VP somewhat enticing, but she’d really be just as happy contributing to the greater good in whatever capacity flows to her.
