Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Book on anal sex (I'll take your word for it) never killed anyone. I'm going to be prioritizing. |
Ok. Do you have a link to a video of this student reading the book? |
You're right. That's why so many are leaving. |
Precisely. Such an environmental is severely demoralizing. |
How young do you want school children learning how to do anal sex? |
Maybe your kids are advanced? My elem. kid doesn't worry about any kind of sex even though the basics have been explained to him by us. And middle schoolers? They can probably tell you about it better than you can from hearing from their friends. We're not talking parochial school, you know. |
Anyone? |
Nope |
Good. We all agree to “ban” the books showing children creative how-to sex techniques, not to mention the explicit diagrams. |
Which book are you referencing? You gave some vague reference to someone reading from a book at a school board meeting, but that’s it. |
We all agree that MAYBE someone scoured all the books at all the secondary school libraries (informed by rightwing groups dedicated to this) and found a graphic novel that had an objectionable page and then instead of doing the usual process of submitting a request that the material be reviewed by the school-community board to see if it is objectionable. Instead they decided to do big public stunts taking the images out of context--and, like a PP, accused people of being "pediphiles" (sic). The actual page I believe was from a young adult graphic novel about a teen who realizes she's a lesbian, imagines sex using a dildo and gets grossed out by the idea. I can't remember the details, but the book is primarily a fairly typical 'coming of age' story, but I agree that the trend to make graphic novels out of everything has made it more difficult for schools to field what is appropriate content for libraries. But that's why libraries HAVE this review body -- and have had it in place for decades. Parents and kids can recommend any book for review--and they can volunteer to be on the review board. There's no need to make a big stunt out of it--there's a process in place to handle the issue. |
+1 I agree with this. |
+1. I am an FCPS secondary librarian. I read book reviews really carefully and will read anything that looks questionable when it arrives or in the case of a graphic novel, try to read any preview pages provided before ordering. With that said, every once in awhile, reviews will not mention a sex scene. I am grateful to parents and students who bring books to my attention. I am perfectly fine with a book going through the book challenge process. I am not fine with people circumventing what I think is a fair and formalized process by screaming at a school board meeting. |
Which book, if any, have you not approved of? |
