Another pregnant teacher

NP. I don’t think teachers have an obligation to stay through the end of the year, but I’m a lawyer, and if someone left when they were 12 weeks pregnant, we would all wonder why. We would essentially wonder why if she were in the middle of a trial or a project of some kind that had a deadline in June and she decided to go ahead and leave in March instead of seeing it through. Yeah, we’d all talk about that.

I thought they have contracts?

I have months of sick leave saved up. I could take leave tomorrow and be paid through the end of the year.

Leaving after 12 weeks of pregnancy? Yeah someone would be questioning that.

People leave jobs all the time. Perhaps the pregnancy isn’t the reason. Or perhaps she knows that the stress of teaching is too much during her pregnancy. It doesn’t matter what her reason is, and it’s wrong of you to question it. She’s an employee and she can choose to leave employment, just like anybody else.

I’ve been teaching 20 years. 10 years ago I would have encouraged people to stay until the end of the year. It’s so bad now that I applaud people for getting out.

My last day was the last day of school before winter break. My health and my baby's health is what is the more important thing.

I had also had preeclampsia with my first (and only) and was in bed rest my last trimester. Dr. said if I got pregnant again I would be on bed rest for even earlier. So who knows. And, like others have said, with the violence in classrooms I know a few teachers who are nervous about being pregnant at school.

Teachers are on their feet all day.

I think that the leave is for when you are sick, no?

It is no one else's business, and only those with a low EQ and little-to-no empathy would question someone else's choices regarding their health and family life.

I lost three babies due to incompetent cervix, all between 16-20 weeks, so I had a trans-abdominal cerclage placed for my subsequent pregnancy, was monitored closely (including weekly OB visits beginning at 13 weeks, and was told to take it easy for both my physical and mental health. I'm sure a number of people questioned why I was so cautious beginning my second trimester, but they had no idea what I was going through emotionally. I was a mess.

And having pregnancy complications qualifies you to take sick leave.

How do you know all of this? This seems like private, medical info. Unless she shared it. In any event, you’re out of luck. MYOB.

When I was pregnant and high risk, a student threatened me with scissors in front of my class and said he was going to shoot a bunch of teachers the next day. Threat assessment determined he wasn’t “serious” and he was back in my room the next morning.

If I could have quit I would have.

Clearly there's something going on (that is NONE of your business) that made her feel that she had to take leave for the rest of her pregnancy. Maybe she has HG and can't stop throwing up, maybe it's too hard for her to be on her feet all day, maybe her doctor is concerned about her blood pressure, maybe she's worried a bad kid will throw a chair at her stomach, you have no idea and it's NONE of your business.

VA is at will. The contracts don’t really do anything.

Hm, tell that to the teachers complaining that they have to stay 15 minutes past their contracted hours for a parent teacher meeting.

And teachers wonder why parents think they don’t care. My kids have had two te she’s do this in 3 years. Then they get some crappy long term sub if they are lucky.

Because teaching is ridiculous right now and this is her out. No one wants to hear us~ way too much stress in teaching dealing with all the behaviors and the lack of support.

Talk about this....the kids are out of control and teachers are showing parents they respect the profession as little as the profession and community respect them. Spoiler alert there is a huge lack of respect for teachers. There is a huge lack of support and safety in classrooms. Teachers are done.
