Here's another prevailing trend: Mass shooters killing people. Didja hear the latest? ![]() |
I’d prefer we have sensible gun laws so that a man with an obvious anger problem and an “extensive criminal history” not have access to an AR-15 so that graduation parties don’t become shootouts. |
Of course it is about money. |
Non-sequitur. Can you please try to answer the question? |
Why does anyone need an AR 15? Why do these bloody slaughters happen mostly in the USA again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again? |
I bet California will put a sizable tax on guns and ammo, directing such tax funds be used for school safety and mental health/red flag laws. Create a stamp tax and don't allow untaxed ammo or firearms to be brought into the state without the state stamp.
You could create a very similar regulatory framework to cigarettes. Financial nudges work better than outright bans. |
DP. I think a lot of people are angry and frustrated that nothing has been done for the last decade. There are plenty of other posts that talk about the real issue - loose gun control in the US - maybe you should focus on those. |

We desperately need mental health checks before people can buy guns. I just found out that my dad bought a gun a year after being diagnosed with dementia. I knew my parents had two guns in a locked safe but I assumed my mom bought them. Nope. My dad just left the house randomly and came back with a gun. My mom had to confiscate it and hide it from him. My dad now believes the neighbor is trying to kill him. Imagine if he still had access to that gun. |
Mental health checks on everyone in a household with guns. The Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza was batshit insane but his mother was the one who owned the guns. |
Exactly. We should be able to enjoy going to a party and not having to worry about strapping a hogleg on to do so. Tighten up the gun laws so that it isn't as easy for criminals to get them. |
It's taking away our freedom to go about our daily lives if we have to constantly think about arming ourselves. |
Existing gun laws don’t work when mental health people refuse to report threats of carnage. If we implement consequences for them, we could fix things overnight. |
This point seems to get missed far too much. We are more willing to regulate personal freedoms that only affect individuals and families on the basis of others' morality (e.g. whether I have certain medical procedures, whether my neighbor marries his boyfriend...) than we are to regulate personal freedoms that are potentially harmful. Even if your gun never shoots me, forcing me to go into public spaces with open carry has a measurable impact on my levels of physical stress. |
Y'all cain't take away mah freedom. |
