Things like universal mandatory background checks and ability to track movement of guns via persistent searchable database would take away a good 80% plus of the pathways for criminals to get guns.

Track movement? Your “persistent searchable database” will lead from the crime-gun recovery to the original purchaser, and stop there with nothing in between. The authorities seem to have no trouble accomplishing that now.

Your thesis also ignores the smuggling solution. The same people who bring in tons of illicit narcotics will be more than happy to ship firearms.

When coupled with mandatory universal background checks, when you then trace it, the last guy to show up in the records is the one who moved it into the criminal underground. Couple it with a law that says you must report lost or stolen guns, and there's no out. Might be able to get away with saying you lost guns or had them stolen ONCE but after that if you want to claim you lost guns or had them stolen AGAIN then AT BEST you are an irresponsible gun owner who shouldn't have had guns in the first place, and at worst you are an accessory to the crime for having supplied the gun to the criminals whether directly or indirectly.

You left out the smuggling part. And the part where a person can be as responsible as a person can be but still have their property stolen. Police have guns stolen from them all the time.

Punish criminals not decent people.

Here is one common sense gun law I would support. Possess a gun in commission of a crime automatic extension of prison sentence by 15 years, with no chance of parole during those 15 years.

FBI revises crime data, reveals increase after initial decline reported

The FBI has revised its 2022 crime data, initially reporting a 2.1% decrease in violent crime. The updated figures now reveal a 4.5% increase. The revision includes 80,000 more incidents of violent crime than previously reported, with an increase of 1,699 murders, 7,780 rapes, over 33,000 robberies and 37,000 aggravated assaults.

There was language in Lankford's Bipartisan Border Bill to provide resources to improve detection of fentanyl and fentanyl precursors and to sanction those who are involved in or enabling fentanyl production and distribution internationally, but Trump picked up the phone to his MAGA members of Congress and killed the bill.

The House Republicans' bill had NOTHING. Not even a single mention of the word "fentanyl."
