Are we sure districts will comply? WTOP keeps talking about lawsuits, but I haven't seen any filed against the bill, just the EO.

The constitutionality of the bill has been challenged in court, since it takes away powers that have been traditionally given to locally elected school boards, and Democratic Del. Marcus Simon said the amendments will ultimately end up in court as well. The governor’s office and Republicans have said a simple majority vote is required for the bill to go into immediate effect; Democrats say a 4/5th majority is required. Simon said there are conflicting provisions in the state constitution saying that both things are true.

(Funny thing how Del. Simon didn't mind when the House changed the rules in 2020 to use a simple majority vote to pass an emergency clause from Northam.)

It's state law now and the state constitution is very clear about the General Assembly controlling education.

What? Article VIII, Section 7 gives School Boards the power to supervise schools. The General Assembly has a role in standards of learning but not supervising schools. This law seems unconstitutional to me.

Don’t worry. I’m sure within a couple of days a court will issue an emergency order that stops the law going into effect. All these cultish anti-maskers are celebrating way, way prematurely.

Try it. An ADA claim. That will go to the US Supreme Court and we know which way a 6-3 Supreme Court will rule.

You forced child maskers are going to lose, that's been obvious since Youngkin said before his inauguration he'd issue EO2. The longer you delay things, the bigger loss it will be.

If so than SB 1303 was too…

I love when these people think they've "done" something.

Sir, cases are down because Omicron has run its course in this area. Also, no one is traveling at the moment.

I can't wait to see the numbers after spring break when everyone travels.

We'll continue masking AND living our lives. Contrary to what some believe, you can still live a fun, fulfilling life doing activities while wearing a mask. My kids never complain.

You can’t be serious. He’s saying that cases came down *despite* dropping the mandate, not because kids didn’t wear masks. Seeing people put their idiocy on display like this, acting like it’s a win, explains so much about what’s wrong with society.

And if Omicron has run it’s course, why are districts fighting so hard to keep mask mandates?

As overseen by the General Assembly "The General Assembly shall provide for a system of free public elementary and secondary schools for all children of school age throughout the Commonwealth, and shall seek to ensure that an educational program of high quality is established and continually maintained."

Hope so! How can we support?

I guess it’ll be easy to tell whose parents are republicans now!

Pss - sounds like another closed schooler who said last year the only parents who wanted open schools were Republicans. You closed schoolers/forced child maskers never learn. You remind me of the 3 SF school board members just recalled.

Us too. We haven't been this happy over a political development since Trump lost.

Glad to see that at least some language has been added back in to allow the governor to reinstate mandates. Seems like even Youngkin knows there will be more waves and more death before COVID is done with us for good. But, it should be the local school boards making these decisions based on local conditions, not some Trump hack in Richmond who wants to score points with a COVID-brain addled base.

I guess it'll be easy to tell whose parents are virtual signaling and not that smart liberals ! - I would add "now!" but let's be honest we already know who those parents are

You know what - I am beginning to think that people like you should be forced to keep your kids at home. That way the county is guaranteeing their safety and you won't have to worry about them being near the unmasked.

VLP for all the masked!!!

You're right. This is pure politics and has nothing to do with health or science. Not sure why it is worth celebrating that politicians instead of medical professionals are setting public health policy.

Because these aren't pure medical decisions. They're public policy decisions, weighing many factors and tradeoffs. It's like if you said all terrorism decisions should be made by terrorism experts - people would look at you if you're insane.

You're saying because these public health experts have risk tolerances that are WAY more cautious than the average American, that should control. Nope. You can stay masked inside your house until COVID goes away though (which is never going to happen).

Because those medical professionals only view the complex equation through one variable, when setting actual public policy should balance the equation with a multitude of variables taken into account.

Of course it's pure politics; the crazy Dems have made it that way. Health and science said we would have been without masks weeks ago.
