I don’t think masks are a big deal. Kids are versatile - they are fine and don’t complain about wearing them. But I also think masks aren’t necessary and theater / virtue signaling.

This. I can’t help but wonder if the OP is one of the Margery Smelkinson groupies who are essentially no-nothing Trumpers who use her science background as a cloak for the GOP anti mask / anti vaccine / anti any sensible precaution against the spread of covid.

Schools without masks are closing all over the south. Entire districts have closed schools in Texas and Florida (both states who are anti masks in school) due to the spread of covid. MCPS has remained open and yes, while not perfect, has managed to navigate the first two months fairly well.

Masks are literally not a big deal but these anti maskers are more invested in cultish politics than the safety of our kids and keeping schools safe and open.

Except it isn’t theater. Theater would be if they had zero impact on the spread of covid. Mask DO reduce the risk of covid.

My theory is that it signifies how Covid changes have cemented loss of privilege and status that they want to reclaim. If you had a privileged life before Covid, you are more eager to try and get the world “back to normal” and if people keep wearing masks is a major signifier that things still are not normal and they still are not as important as they once were. No one pretends to be your friend at work or laugh at your jokes during a meeting anymore since Covid.

They are the biggest fear mongers ever...not in the fear mongering of health (they just abandon their actual science practices and pretend their PhD's are worth something), but fear mongerers about the mental health of students and academics. Reesman couldn't possibly fathom how MIDDLE SCHOOLERS did worse on a pre-test before summer school. As if she's never met a middle schooler before. Middle schooler's forced into summer school aren't really keen on trying during the summer. It's almost a certainty they didn't give a single f*ck about a test that wasn't being graded during the summer after a pandemic. But these people are smart! They'll keep reminding you of their education. They unfortunately have nothing to back that up.

In Japan, wearing a mask was common pre-Covid. It was a sign that both you were courteous not to spread germs (ex. in a subway) as well as showing courtesy to others.

They’d love you to believe students in MoCo are killing themselves on an hourly basis, all learned absolutely nothing last year, are miserable in masks, and will never recover from last year.
