Exactlly this. The Reeseman, Smelkinson crew are going bananas because for once their lives have been inconvenienced. It's not always about you.

I’m so exhausted by them. I think they felt relevant for once in their lives by getting bylines in forced op-Ed’s and somehow think they are important.

Lol you think you’re exhausted? I work at the NIH. Smelkinson thinks it’s still 2002 and proud not to be like other women.

She also thinks she’s way more clever and funny than she is…she’s 100% not as smart as she thinks she is. We all wish she’d shut up. She’s making women scientists look terrible.

Agreed. My kindergartener whines not at all about masks. Literally never. Unlike most adults.

Over the last few weeks we have had unmasked homecoming, parties, kids are having playdates constantly, and even unmasked lunch in schools. And almost no spread (very minimal at worst).

With the 5 to 11 group set to vaccinated very shortly, when do we start discussing masks? If you are a "mask forever" type please spare me, you are not based in reality or science. This is a serious discussion about when we think it will be safe. That day is coming, and probably sooner than we think. Me? I am think by Jan 2022 masks won't be necessary in schools and MCPS will ultimately have to bow to public pressure.

It's a STATE requirement. Did you know that?

Don't worry I'm sure that parents will take that into consideration when they complain to the school board and somehow, improbably blame mcea

Because she thinks it is normal.

How low are you willing to set the bar for her?

I am hoping by spring they will start to let go of some of this anxiety and then our kids can unmask in schools provided MSDe agrees.

Cdc recommends masking at school.

And yet tons of kids coming down with colds and throat infections and coughs.

How do you explain that? Masks are not the long term answer. The folks getting sick with Covid are obese and/or have lung issues. Let's tackle that.

I mean we can debate about whether they are necessary but stop gaslighting on them being awesome. Yes, my neurotypical kids will comply and wear them because that is the price for in person school but they are a big deal to them. My daughter says she can’t recognize her classmates on the playground and has difficulty hearing and understanding her teacher. She is soft spoken so when she says please repeat she is often not heard behind 3 layers of cotton. They are not great for learning and developing peer relationships which is probably why other countries are quicker to let them go in schools once cases under control.

Well, some of 'em are obese and/or have lung issues. And some of 'em aren't. Let's tackle the twin ideas that only sick people get sick from covid and that sick people who get sick from covid have only themselves to blame.

In any case, it's foolish to focus on MCPS for masks. MCPS is complying with a state requirement.

I’m wondering if you work in person because I do and we have an indoor mask mandate at my office and it’s hard. It’s harder to connect with people, to understand people, read social cues etc. I can’t wait for us to get to moderate so we can go back to the early days of summer and no mask wearing. It’s a big deal. The parents clinging to them forever must not interact with people inside a lot.

We're discussing masks and covid. Covid, which transmits primarily through aerosolized droplets that masks work well at stopping. Not other diseases with other pathways. Don't conflate them, please.

“The findings of this study are extremely encouraging for the health and safety of students and staff attending schools where universal masking is in place,” said Kanecia Zimmerman, MD, MPH, co-chair of the ABC Science Collaborative. “The Delta variant is more transmissible than previous ancestral variants, but transmission in schools can continue to be low with vaccination among those who are eligible, strict adherence to masking, and avoidance of pandemic fatigue.”
