Why are you hanging out in the left lane?

Roads are messed up. Aggressive crazies are intentionally choosing to weave in and out like playing a video game on a real highway.

Why would they weave if the left lane is open to pass?

Because the DC beltway is almost always clogged in all lanes. Your idea of a free left lane is a total fantasy. You're crazy and selfish for wanting everyone else to squeeze over during rush hour so you can keep going 90.

Either become certified to drive an ambulance or move back to an empty state if you want that kind of treatment.

Oh please this thread is not at all about the Beltway at rush hour and you know it.

Yes it is. The beltway during rush hour is where most of DCUM commenters drive. You're the one imagining some lone mystery highway where the left lane is always free...

No, the beltway at rush hour is one of many strawmen raised by people in this thread who don't want to follow the rules of the road and, in some states, the law regarding staying to the right. Other strawmen include
(1) Everyone passing me is speeding excessively (i.e., everyone going faster than me is going dangerously fast)
(2) Everyone who comes up behind me is tailgating me (yes, tailgating happens, but not everyone who wants to pass you is doing that)
(3) Everyone who wants to pass me is filled with road rage
(4) Everyone who is passing me is a crazy person weaving in and out of traffic.

I'm still amazed by how many people are resistant to a relatively simple behavior (staying to the right except to pass) that is designed to help all of us share the road safely. For many on this thread (e.g., 70 MPH in cruise control on the left), it seems like they expect every other person on the road to accommodate them with no reciprocation.

There are lots of times outside of rush hour when the beltway is not jammed, when 270 or 66 is free flowing, when the GW parkway is relatively empty, etc where this principle would help everyone be safer. And it's an important rule to follow when you are driving somewhere further outside of the city (e.g., huge stretches of 95 headed south are 2-lanes each way).

If you're still trying to pass someone else who is already going 70, you are by definition breaking the law. You have no unlimited right to speeding.

If you’re still sitting in the left lane not passing someone, you are by definition breaking the law. You have no unlimited right to left lane sitting.

But we are generally still passing slower traffic sitting in the right lane. You're just mad becuase you can't speed even faster. Again, you are breaking the law and endangering others.

If you passed someone five minutes ago and see someone else a mile ahead that you plan to pass, you’re not still passing. Troopers in Jersey pull people over for this. There are laws regulating left lane sitting in every state but South Dakota.

NJ is actually a great example. The turnpike is mostly 2 lanes, with much slower trucks in the right. As a regular car you almost have no choice but to stay in the left lane going 75 or 80 already. And then of course you still get a lunatic a$$hole from behind who wants to go 100+. But that's Jersey for you!

FACTS:
Most of NJ turnpike isn't 2 lanes.
There is a section divided into cars vs. trucks.
Trucks do not drive that slowly.
You are a jerk for hogging the left lane.

Better be careful in NJ. They have ways to take care of jerks like you.

I don't believe the implication in your comment that you never speed. Sorry, that's BS. But, since you're so concerned about following each and every law to the letter, I presume you will now start following the laws about not sitting in the left hand lane. Thank you for that.

Yes, if the PP isn't speeding then certainly PP isn't sitting the left lane...so the this thread isn't meant for you.

Given the history of this thread, I'm not so certain that some individuals don't feel entitled to sit in the left lane going at or under the speed limit on a mostly empty highway.

Not PP but he/she is clearly referring to the southernmost 30 miles of the Turnpike which is indeed two lanes. I agree that that’s so not “most of the Turnpike” but it has come up here a bunch of times since it’s prime territory for left lane blocking behavior. What I particularly hate is that as soon as the three lanes open up at exit 4, everyone who was already in the left just continues blocking the now far left even though the oh so slow and scary trucks immediately move to the far right.

This just applies to highways. The rest of our roads are way too crowded to leave one whole lane open for people who want to go 20+ the speed limit. Although I do think you need to be going at least 5 over to get in the left lane. It’s still the faster lane, just not a passing lane.

Not PP but I actually do drive in the truck lanes instead of the car lanes because there is so much less of the crap in it. But when truck lanes aren’t available it’s impossible to leave you be when you drive right next to the truck for a dozen miles.

No, only you morons who can't understand this very simple rule think that.

But, for example, near the top middle of the photo is a car that is well behind the car in front of it about to go by a truck, which itself is behind the car in front of it. It may be the case that, when the car is done passing the truck, it should move over into that space so that other cars behind it might be able to pass. Now, it's tough to tell from a static image at this angle exactly what's going on, but that is a possibility in the photo.

You're an idiot. That car is maintaining a safe distance. You might try it sometime instead of tailgating like a raging lunatic.

Look, we're all trying to get home, so quit complaining already that you can't have the left lane all to yourself to go 90.

Literally no one said that. Are you having trouble following?

For the other 20 hours in the day when the beltway looks like this, please don’t be a d1ck and simply keep right & pass left:

It’s really not that hard. Give it a try.
