SIL is upset I did not punish my step daughter for being disrespectful

$10/hour = $2.50 per kid. That is outrageous. It's the woman's husband's sister's stepdaughter I think. . . pretty tenuated, not really a relative

She should have politely declined the low rate and told your SIL she had other plans that night. $20/hr for babysitting two kids is normal in the DC area. 4 or more is more like $30/hr. and more I personally don't pay my step-DD for babysitting her siblings, but I also don't ask/expect her to do it. If she wants to volunteer her time once a month, it is appreciated, but not expected. I'd rather pay hired help and not ask ANY family members to avoid drama.

Not for a 16 year old.

She's paying her because she is really invested in proving what a.great step-parent she is. Same reason she has no standard for the kid's behavior.

Saying this over and over doesn’t make it true. A 16 year old is also enough to have a “regular” job, and those will all pay more than what SIL offered. If you know 16 y/os willing to work for pennies feel free to pay them that way, but in this area that is an insulting wage, and I am sure SD had better things to do with her time than watch four children who were raised by someone who doesn’t respect their babysitter.

Well…it was funny 😆. Good for step daughter for standing up for herself at young age. Will serve her well in life. No, she should not apologize for being insulted.

If she commands those wages, I would expect her to be more mature. More professional in her interactions.
